The Light Hearted Lovers Op 47a Kirke Mechem (b. 1925) Kirke Mechem is the composer of more than 200 published works in almost every form. His three-act opera, Tartuffe, with 180 performances since its premiere by the San Francisco Opera, is one of the most popular operas ever written by an American; it has been given in Mandarin in China, translated into German and Japanese, and in Russian it is in the continuing repertory of the Mussorgsky National Theater for Opera and Ballet in St. Petersburg. Songs of the Slave, a suite for bass-baritone, soprano, chorus and orchestra from his opera-in-progress, John Brown, was performed in 1995 in Kennedy Center, Washington DC as the featured work of the American Choral Directors national convention, and has since received performances by choruses and orchestras in every part of the country. Mechem was guest of honor at the 1990 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and was invited back for an all-Mechem symphonic concert by the USSR Radio-Television Orchestra in 1991. He was born and raised in Kansas and educated at Stanford and Harvard universities. He conducted and taught at Stanford and was for several years composer-in-residence at the University of San Francisco. He lived in Vienna for three years where he came to the attention of Josef Krips, who later championed Mechem's music as conductor of the San Francisco Symphony. Mechem's talents have been acknowledged through numerous honors, including retrospectives, grants, commissions and special anniversary performances. West Bay Opera Tartuffe An Interview with Kirke Mechem Did you begin composing the opera with a predetermined harmonic scheme? What about motifs? Musical quotes? Wagner? I did some graduate work at the University of Kansas - thought I detected a two measure variation on the Jayhawk fight song. Perhaps I've spent too much concentrated time looking for all of your subtleties As I grew up in Topeka, 28 miles from KU, and as I did write an overture called The Jayhawk: Magic Bird Overture, I can't swear that some of it didn't spill into Tartuffe, but only accidentally. No, I did not begin with any ``predetermined harmonic scheme,'' other than that the music would be tonal, fun and that I would spoof some opera conventions. Wagner is always an easy target. The musical `leitmotifs' were just the result of my trying to find the appropriate musical description for each character. Were you interested in appealing to a particular audience? It seems to me this opera would be accessible to any audience, from the most educated to the least. Thank you. It does seem to appeal to most people. I intended the work to be first performed by the San Francisco Opera's Spring Opera Theater, but of course I wanted to write a work that would stay in the repertory. My method is always to please myself first of all - you only tie yourself into knots when you try to figure out how to please this or that constituency.
