    86. Of Shamans And Charlatans
But while composer kirke mechem has published some 250 works in almostevery musical form, 'Tartuffe' is his maiden foray into opera.

    Of shamans and charlatans
West Bay Opera presents 'Tartuffe,' a Moliere play-turned-opera by Laura Reiley In the first act, Tartuffe is this sanctimonious, holier-than-thou guy who gets held up by just about everyone as the poster child for religious piety. By the third act, the jig is up and Tartuffe is exposed as a lecherous fraud, leaving him little choice but to decamp for friendlier environs and leave the truly decent people in peace. The plot of the Moliere play-turned-opera is the kind of juicy story that the media swarm over and the general public can't quite seem to get enough of these days. No wonder, then, that "Tartuffe," first performed in 1980, has become one of the most popular operas ever written by an American, performed nearly 200 times (West Bay Opera's opening-night performance tonight will be number 200 exactly) and translated into German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Czech. But while composer Kirke Mechem has published some 250 works in almost every musical form, 'Tartuffe' is his maiden foray into opera. "I had never really gotten the opera bug until I saw the American Conservatory Theater's production of the play "Tartuffe" in the 1970s," Mechem recalls. "I have always liked Moliere's plays, especially 'Tartuffe,' but not until I saw the ACT production in San Francisco did I realize that it had wonderful possibilities for comic operathat it was, in fact, a comic opera just waiting for the music."

Friday was a notable day for the Bay Area composer Kirke Mechem: the 200th performance of his comic opera Tartuffe . Mechem himself was in the audience for West Bay Opera’s new production at the Lucie Stern Theater in Palo Alto. Director Kenneth Tigar and conductor David Sloss brought together an excellent young cast, beautiful sets and costumes, and inspired musical direction of Mechem’s witty and very entertaining work. Tartuffe ’s international success is easy to understand. Based on one of Moliere’s funniest and most enduring comedies, it has a sure-fire plot full of intrigue, satire, and hilarious situations. The con man Tartuffe, posing as a humble man of God, has infiltrated the household of the wealthy Orgon with hopes of seducing Orgon’s wife, marrying his daughter, and getting his hands on as much money and property as possible. Orgon’s family must work together to expose Tartuffe’s villainy and thwart his schemes. Mechem’s music is brisk, sparkling, and varied, stocked with the kinds of numbers familiar from comic opera and operetta. There are patter songs and ensembles, waltz songs, laughing songs, and spoofs of "high" style. The music pushes the action along and at the same time is full of its own interest and jokes for the opera lover to savor.

By Wendy Marinaccio Special to the Town Crier West Bay Opera is in rehearsal for its February productions of the American comedic opera "Tartuffe." The opera was created by San Francisco composer Kirke Mechem and its 200th performance will be Feb. 16, opening night for West Bay Opera's run. "This opera is fun, it's entertaining," Mechem said. He based his opera on Moliere's play "Tartuffe," written in 1660. The plot of the opera is about exposing a con artist trying to pass for a holy man. "'Tartuffe' is trying to convince everyone he's so holy, while at the same time he's trying to dupe Orgon out of his money," Mechem said, "and he's also trying to get (Orgon's) wife in bed."
