Gr. 4^-6. The older sister of Felix Mendelssohn, Fanny was an accomplished musician and composer in her own right. However, born to a wealthy family in nineteenth-century Germany, she found it impossible to pursue a career in music. Instead, the dutiful wife and mother watched her brother grow away from her as he achieved fame, and she struggled to continue writing and performing, eventually publishing some of her music. The many quotations from letters give Fanny a voice: "If only once I could have as many rehearsals as I wanted! I really believe I have the talent for working out pieces and making the interpretation clear to people. But oh, the dilettantes ." The epilogue introduces 14 women who have composed or conducted music since Fanny Mendelssohn's death in 1847. Ink-and-watercolor illustrations (not seen) by Kamen will appear in the finished book.

Fanny Mendelssohn: Bergeslust Op. 10 No. 5

Get RealAudio Fanny Mendelssohn, Felix's older sister, has been long and unjustly overlooked as a serious composer, despite a considerable and impressive output comprising numerous piano pieces, duets, trios, choral works, chamber music for different instruments, an overture, an oratorio, several major cantatas - and innumerable songs. She was writing music at a time when it was considered unsuitable for a woman from the upper middle classes to have ambitions as a professional musician. Despite her gifts and desire for recognition, throughout most of her life Fanny respected the prevailing conventions and the wishes of her family, and accepted the prescribed role of a cultivated Berlin lady of her time. This CD is devoted to nearly 30 of her beautiful songs, most of them appearing on disc for the first time. The poets include Goethe, Heine, Eichendorff, Rückert, Lenau and Geibel, most of whom were known to her personally. This CD has been a 'labour of love' for the two artists, Susan Gritton and Eugene Asti, who have together written the extensive booklet notes. Recorded in All Saints Church, East Finchley, London, on 15-17 March 1999

Press: "This collection contains some of the most dazzling piano playing you are likely ever to encounter. A real whirlwind, this." Jacob Siskind - Ottawa Citizen "The recently issued recordings of piano music for four hands with the Duo Tal & Groethuysen were a source of genuine interest and surprise. Their artistic quality was extraordinary, reflecting a superior pianistic mastery practiced on largely unknown works. Following Czerny, Reger and the brillant Dvorak/Rubinstein/Rachmaninov programme, the duo´s latest recordings of four handed compositions by Mendelssohn are pure enchantment. As exceptional as the pianistic perfection and the technical precision and virtuosity, with which the highly sophisticated primo and secondo parts are interpreted with sheer playful ease, is the ever-present, profoundly impressive harmony between these two artists, and their wonderful tonally-dynamic balance. This rare quality blends two personalities with varying temperament into a duo radiationg an almost exemplary, chamber-music discipline."
