Introduction Fanny Mendelssohn, born 14th November 1805, was the eldest child of Abraham Mendelssohn (1776-1835) and Lea Salomon (1777-1842). The family had three other children Felix (1809-1847), Rebecca (1811-1858) and Paul (1812-1874). The maternal and paternal genealogy was Jewish. Abraham Mendelssohn was the son of Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786), a renown Jewish intellectual and philosopher and Lea’s family were wealthy Bankers. Jews at this time were despised and mainly consigned to ghettos, even Jews who held great wealth were "outsiders" in the upper echelons of German society. Sadly, many saw the renunciation of their Jewish faith and culture necessary if they were to be assimilated in the anti-Semitic atmosphere of nineteenth century Europe. Abraham and Lea Mendelssohn converted to Protestantism in 1822, also adopting the name Bartholdy. Singakademie

Erato Quartett Basel (Emilie Haudenschild, violin; Attila Adamka, violin; Heinz Haudenschild, viola; Emeric Kostyak, cello). cpo 999 679-2 (72'23) My copy of the Norton/Grove Dictionary of Women Composers is comfortingly thick, over 500 pages; however, I probably own fewer than 25 classical CDs of music by women. Some labels CRI, for example release a substantial number of disks featuring women composers, but even today women are much more likely to be seen performing classical music than composing it. Women are to be heard but not heard from. No matter how much the situation appears to be changing at present and it is changing, consider the success in America of Joan Tower, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Shalamit Ran and others (there are, of course, similar changes going on throughout the world) past iniquities cannot be altered, and it must be accounted something more than a shame that for centuries over half of our number have been silenced, often for no better reason than something as ludicrous as bourgeois propriety. This collection of string quartets by 19th century women demonstrates that the silence was not complete. Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel (1805-1847) wrote over 400 works, mainly songs and short works for piano. Her brother Felix seems to have encouraged her writing but discouraged its publication. She wrote mainly for her Berlin salon, the salon being one of the few socially acceptable outlets for female creativity in the 19th century. Her

AmazonUK AmazonUS This is both an interesting and infuriating book. I did not find it a book that I could not put down as the great Christa Ludwig states. Betsy Jolas must surely be way over the top when she says that this book changed her life . Gerard Conde in Le Monde speaks of Fanny as an unjustly neglected composer and inherent in that statement is the idea that she is a good composer at least. This sort of praise is counterproductive for it seeks to make up one’s mind and this praise can therefore do more harm than good. The musical examples quoted in the book show a very basic ability to compose relying on formulae. Anyone with a little music knowledge can do this. It is not even as good as first year Music College composition. And listening to the recordings of her music it may be charming but has nothing new to say Even if you have not heard the music before you are sure that you have. The book also reeks of feminist sexism, one of the most insidious traits of the last 30 years or so. The facts are that very few women wanted to be composers not that they were kept down. It is the same situation with the suffragette movement in Britain a hundred years ago. Hitherto women did not want to vote or to be in politics and therefore to say that women were kept down is another sexist remark that shows that unacceptable feminist attitude that women are superior. They are not. They are better than men in some things, that’s for sure, but not in being composers! The implication is that Fanny would have been a star but for men! What absolute nonsense! Her music is not great.

Victorian high society worshipped Felix Mendelssohn, and you could not get higher than Queen Victoria and her Consort, Prince Albert, who were among his most ardent admirers. Mendelssohn seemed to have all the talents – youthful high spirits, sensitivity, a gentle romanticism and, above all, a precocious musical genius. It is easy to see why the Songs without words appealed to parlour pianists, but his fluency and refinement easily overcame whatever concessions he may have made to public taste, and works such as the Scottish and Italian Symphonies

Meisterkomponisten
Rediscovering of Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn
Von Victoria Sirota, erschienen im Furore Verlag
In late June 1980, I arrived in Berlin to spend the summer doing research on the music of Fanny Hensel geb. Mendelssohn at the Staatsbibliothek Preußischer Kulturbesitz. The summer was a difficult one. My husband, Robert Sirota, was taking care of our four-year-old son and teaching composition at Tanglewood in Western Massachusetts. I missed them both terribly, and strugg-led to feel comfortable in a foreign country. As I studied Hensel's manuscripts, I began to despair. German language study had not prepared me to decipher Hensel's Fraktur with its antiquated spellings. I also had splitting headaches. The faded brown ink on beige paper was hard to read. On July 5th, my 31st birthday, I talked with my family. They were doing fine. Bob's composition class had had lunch the day before with both Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. My son loved his summer program. As I shared my discouragement and headaches, my husband asked a simple question, "Are you taking your glasses off for close work?" No, I hadn't thought of that. The headaches ceased, and I began to look at the process of deci-phering Hensel's handwriting as detective work. I made my own Fraktur chart of her letters. The breakthrough came as I was working on the manuscript of Lobgesang, the first composition she wrote after the difficult birth of her son, Sebastian. As I began to study the music of a recitative, the words of the Gospel of John rang out about a woman forgetting her pain once her child is born (John 16:21). The aria following ("O daß ich tausend Zungen hätte") was lovely. I wept. Not only could I finally read her handwriting, but as a mother I could identify with the joy and thanksgiving for the birth of a child. In addition, however, as a musician and scholar, my mind was reeling.

a concert review by Irene Brychcin
Exactly 151 years and 3 days after its completion, conductor Robert Page, the women of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, soprano Lisa Temple, and pianist Joy Ann Crummie joined forces to present Faust by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel in its American Premiere and first modern performance on Saturday, March 26, 1994. The reconstruction and modern edition of Faust is by Dr. Suzanne Summerville, Professor of Music at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
This excellent reconstruction and edition by Dr. Suzanne Summerville brings to the repertoire a fine example of early-middle nineteenth century choral, vocal, and pianistic styles, the work having been completed March 23, 1843. The role of the piano is vital in setting the mood of each contrasting section and the virtuosic demands placed upon the performer reflect Fanny Hensel's skill as a pianist. The playing of pianist Joy Ann Crummie brought forth the elegance and vivacity characteristic of this genre. Soprano Lisa Temple was outstanding as Ariel with a beautiful, clear, expressive voice. The women of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh were superb as the spirit chorus with vocal coloration that enhanced the poetry and clearly defined the contrasts within the work. The masterful preparation, insight, and conducting of Music Director and Conductor Robert Page made this a cohesive, expressive, and enjoyable performance that was warmly and enthusiatically received by the audience.

Sontraud Speidel, Pianist
Brioso Recordings
Pianist Sontraud Speidel should be commended for her efforts on this new release by Brioso. This special album contains some truly enjoyable, charming, off-the-beaten path solo piano pieces composed by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel. She is, of course, the beloved sister and great source of inspiration of her more famous, if not necessarily more gifted sibling, Felix Mendelssohn.
The music, in the character of German Piano Romanticism-and with many parts reminiscent of the style of Felix Mendelssohn-is interpreted by Ms. Speidel with clarity, competence, and care. Her pianistic prowess is displayed in the cascades of ascending and descending arpeggios-strings of notes nevertheless restricted in a few instances to just that, notes. One could not help hoping the multiplicity of notes would transcend to a more exalted level of song, joy, and wonder.
The most sublime results come in the contemplative movement of "Sonata in E Major," the dramatic and majestic Allegro molto quasi Presto (E major); the "Wanderer Song - Presto" (E major), wherein the sense of loss and helplessness is brought out in an almost wild and desperate world of feeling; and the Andante espressivo (A-flat major) taken from her four "Songs for the Pianoforte" (Book II), which reflects the quiet beauty of a Schubertian song.
