    Biography
Messiaen was very religious and his music, both organ and other, reflects his extreme faith-bordering on mysticism. He used musical resources from many traditions, ranging from rhythms of the orient to early Christian Gregorian Chant to birdsong. His pieces achieve unity through his careful interdependence of melodies, rhythms, and harmonies.
    Points of Interest

Olivier Messiaen combined profound musical knowledge, Roman Catholic mysticism, an interest in ornithology, and a wild musical imagination to produce some the greatest music of the last 60 years. This is not music for the unadventurous, but I have been able to interest the uninitiated with the ethereal beauty of Quartet for the End of Time - a piece composed and first performed in a German prison camp during World War II.
I'm having difficulty finding good Messiaen resources on the WWW, but will post any good links I do find here.

During the war he found himself surrounded by an eager group of students, including Boulez and Yvonne Loriod, who eventually became his second wife. For her pianistic brilliance he conceived the Visions de l'amen (1943, with a second piano part for himself) and the (1944), followed by an exuberant triptych on the theme of erotic love: the song cycle Harawi (1945), the with solo piano and ondes martenot (1948) and the Cinq rechants for small chorus (1949). Meanwhile the serial adventures of Boulez and others were also making a mark, and Messiaen produced his most abstract, atonal and irregular music in the for piano (1949) and the Livre d'orgue His next works were based largely on his own adaptations of birdsongs: they include for piano and orchestra (1953)

Der Komponist Olivier Messiaen wurde am 10. Dezember 1908 in Avignon geboren. April 1992 in Paris. WebGuide

Olivier Messiaen By Paul Musser paul@musica.co.uk Born 10 December, 1908 in Avignon, France Died 28 April, 1992 in Paris, France A composer, organist, and teacher of remarkable ability, Olivier Messiaen fashioned an individual sound rooted in his deeply held spiritual beliefs. Born into an educated household, his mother a poet and father a noted translator of Shakespeare, Olivier Messiaen's early interest in the arts were nurtured and encouraged by his family. By the age of nine, Messiaen had already begun playing the piano and composing. The following year, his musical world changed when his harmony teacher Jehan de Gibon gave him a copy of Debussy's opera Pelléas et Mélisande, a moment and work that Messiaen described as being, "probably the most decisive influence of my life." At the age of eleven, Messiaen enrolled in the prestigious Paris Conservatory. He excelled in his scholastic studies, receiving five first prizes (piano accompaniment, organ, music history, composition, counterpoint, and composition). Messiaen's musical language was also greatly influence by his teachers, especially Paul Dukas, whose modal writing had a profound affect. An early example of this harmonic language is evident in Le banquet céleste, an organ work composed in 1928. The work's instrumentation and utilization of an extremely solo tempo reflect both a concern with temporal and religious matters that would appear throughout Messiaen's career.
