Giacomo Meyerbeer
Il Crotiato in Egitto , in this musical style and written in 1824, is considered by many to be an operatic masterpiece. Following the great success of Il Crotiato in Egitto , Meyerbeer moved to Paris, France, and got married in 1826. In Paris, Meyerbeer suddenly ceased to compose Italian operas and switched to French. His Robert le Diable is considered to have been the defining work in French opera throughout the Romantic period. Several other great successes came to Meyerbeer in Paris, including Les Hugenots Le Prophete , and L´africaine Ein Feldlager de Schliessen Dinorah Giacomo Meyerbeer died in Paris on 2 May, 1864, and was buried in Berlin. http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/8917/Meyerbio.html
GIACOMO MEYERBEER Much has been written about Meyerbeer's enormous popularity during his lifetime, and his eventual fall from grace during the twentieth century. Many explanations have been proffered for this fall from gracechanges in taste, shortage of the singers who can execute the music, costs of mounting them, and the like. His detractors, primarily Wagner, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Berlioz, and others were noted for their jibes, such as the anti-Semitic Wagner's "Effects without causes". Be that as it may, the impact of these negative comments has lingered, and, as Michael Scott says in his notes for the Opera Rara recording of Dinorah
"We are still living in the wake of these prejudices. The German ideal has triumphed, the opera house has ceased being a place of entertainment, and has become a temple of enlightenment, with the composer as high priest, where formerly the prima donna had been mistress of ceremonies" The battle between opera as a form of enlightenment and opera as a form of entertainment has been raging throughout much of the 19th century, and all of the 20th. Basically, the original cause was an intolerant attitude toward Italian opera on Mendelssohn's part, starting apparently with a letter he wrote while in Italy in 1831. Mendelssohn was no admirer of Italian music, his views being succinctly summarized in a letter criticizing music by Bellini and Pacini where he states «just as a cicisbeo (gigolo) will for ever be repulsive to my feelings, so it is with Italian music. But, of course, Mendelssohn regarded Meyerbeer with the same disdain that he had for Pacini and Bellini, and Schumann as well as Wagner were only too pleased to follow in his footsteps.

Giacomo Meyerbeer was born September 5, 1791 in the town of Vogelsdorf, near Berlin, Germany. His name at birth was Jakob Liebmann Beer. His father was Jakob Herz Beer who owned sugar refineries in Germany and Italy. His mother was Amalia Beer, a Berlin socialite. Her father was Liebmann Meyer Wulf, a successful contractor for Prussia. He was also a respected Jewish leader. Jakob was destined to become one of the world’s great musicians. He fast became known as a child prodigy, and one of the finest pianists in Berlin. His teachers were some of the finest of that time. The master pianist Muzio Clementi taught him piano. He studied composition and counterpoint with the Abbé Vogler in Darmstadt and became friends with composer Carl Maria von Weber. By age 24, Jakob Beer, who now called himself, Giacomo Meyerbeer, the name by which the world would remember him, had composed several promising oratorios and operas in German. At Antonio Salieri’s suggestion, he went to Italy to study vocal composition.

© eMe

MEYERBEER, GIACOMO
His next opera, Les Huguenots, was first performed in 1836. In gorgeous colouring, rhetorical force, consistency of dramatic treatment, and careful accentuation of individual types, it is at least the equal of Robert le Diable. In two points only did its interest fall short of that inspired by the earlier work. Meyerbeer had shown himself so eminently successful in his treatment of the supernatural that one regretted the omission of that element; and, more important still, the fifth act proved to be an anti-climax. The true interest of the drama culminates at the close of the fourth act, when Raoul, leaping from the window to his death, leaves Valentine fainting upon the ground. The opera now usually ends at the fourth act. After the production of Les Huguenots Meyerbeer spent many years in the preparation of his next greatest works—L'Africaine and Le Prophete. The libretti of both these operas were furnished 1 Or, according to some accounts, 1794. MEYNELL—MEZIERES, P. DE
