History
The collection development policy (June 6, 1978) states:
Purpose
  • Collect all scores, original and arrangements and keep one copy for preservation and research purposes. Collect and house all books and articles by the composer. Keep track of materials about the composer, including theses, articles in periodicals and collections, and obtain reprints or copies of these. Collect recordings of Milhaud’s works. Various performances of the same work should be acquired as funds permit. Especially desirable are recordings of performances conducted by the composer himself. Solicit primary sources, manuscripts, letters, memorabilia, etc. which may be of interest to biographers and students of that period. Arrange these materials in a convenient way for servicing and answering questions.
  • In general, the collection does not contain Milhaud’s personal papers. The bulk of letters and manuscripts are retained by the Milhaud family.
    What the Collection Contains
Published scores : Approximately 625 scores, including some rare items, facsimiles of manuscripts, chamber music works with parts, and full scores that are normally unavailable (gifts of publishers). Cataloged on MINERVA.

    DARIUS MILHAUD

Home Page Darius Milhaud Life Born into a Jewish family living in Aix-en-Provence, Darius Milhaud studied under Dukas , Gédalge and Widor at the Paris Conservatoire, originally as a violinist, before turning to composition. He was close friends with many contemporary painters and writers including the diplomat-poet Paul Claudel, whom he accompanied to Brazil as secretary, after Claudel's appointment as Minister at the French delegation in Rio de Janeiro. On his return to Paris in 1918, Milhaud founded (with Honegger Auric Tailleferre Durey and Poulenc ) the movement of the diverse group of French composers known as Les Six, under the protection of Jean Cocteau and Erik Satie. Milhaud spent the years of the Second World War teaching in the United States. He returned to a similar post at the Paris Conservatoire after 1947. Darius Milhaud Works Milhaud wrote a considerable amount of music for the theatre, operas, ballets and incidental music, as well as film and radio scores. Collaboration with Claudel brought the opera Christophe Colombe and a number of compositions of incidental music for plays ranging from those of Shakespeare to the work of contemporaries such as Brecht, Supervielle, Giraudoux and Anouilh.
