Family Names Who's who in the Jewish World? Search Order Darius Milhaud (1892-1974), Composer. Born in Aix-en-Provence, France, descendant of a Jewish family that had lived in Provence for many generations, he studied music as a child and entered the Paris conservatory age 17 as a violin student. While there he began composing. In 1916 he accompanied the poet Paul Claudel who had been appointed ambassador to Brazil and spent two years there, being deeply influenced by Brazilian rhythms. Milhaud wrote over 400 compositions in almost every possible genre. He was one of the school of innovative French composers known as 'Les Six'. Darius Milhaud par Gabriel Vialle (chroniqueur artistique) de sa terre natale, de ses nombreuses terres de passages, de ses convictions religieuses. L'osmose fut la plus complète, la plus significative. Vient ensuite l'ami Armand Lunel, Aixois et descendant des "Juifs du Pape" qui ont si fort marqué les pays d'Oc, y laissant synagogues, cimetières, ghettos (ici, on dit "carrières"), noms de rues, de places, de quartiers, tout un riche patrimoine . Avec Armand Lunel, quatre collaborations, essentielles, depuis l'opéra Les Malheurs d'Orphée jusqu'à la grandiose évocation de David. Viennent ensuite, contemporains de Milhaud ou poètes d'autrefois, Goethe, Rilke, Supervielle Vildrac, Verlaine, Chalupt, Cassou, Vilmorin, Diderot, Ronsard, d'Aubigné, Desnos, Gide, Carême, Hoppenot, Cocteau et Boris Vian: large éventail prouvant l'infatigable curiosité de Milhaud, son refus de la facilité d'un genre, d'un style, d'un langage ressassé. Même si un "air de famille" incontestable, ne serait-ce que par la polytonalité très souvent au rendez-vous, unifie son catalogue, chaque oeuvre a son profil propre, sa démarche, sa logique. On trouvera plus loin la chronologie des pages de Milhaud qui donnent leur place aux formations vocales. Darius Milhaud incarne l'esprit français, au même titre qu'Hector Berlioz, Georges Bizet ou Emmanuel Chabrier, dont il a beaucoup aimé la musique. Son caractère méridional lui inspire une œuvre fondée sur la mélodie , vigoureuse, claire, vivante, où éclate son intarissable joie de créer. Unique enfant d'une grande famille juive installée depuis longtemps dans le sud de la France, esprit curieux, épris de la vie, Milhaud assimile avec une facilité déconcertante toutes les influences au Conservatoire de Paris : il est l'élève de Gustave Leroux pour l' harmonie , André Gédalge pour le contrepoint , Charles-Marie Widor pour la composition et surtout Paul Dukas pour l' orchestration . Leroux (harmonie), A. Gédalge (contrapunt) en d’Indy (compositie) studeerde. Van 1916 tot 1918 verbleef hij in Brazilië als secretaris van de toenmalige Franse gezant, de dichter Paul Claudel. Vele van zijn composities uit deze jaren en vlak daarna vertonen de invloed van de Zuid-Amerikaanse folklore, zoals bijv. het ballet Le bœuf sur le toit Zijn naam als componist werd in 1919 gevestigd door de lancering van de Groupe des Six , waarvan hij deel uitmaakte. Na een periode van concertreizen door Amerika en Europa vestigde Milhaud zich in 1940 in de Verenigde Staten, waar hij in Oakland (Calif.) compositie doceerde.
