November 1643 in Venedig. WebGuide

Claudio Monteverdi, 1576-1643
Born in Cremona 1567, he studied music in his teens and went to Mantova to become court musician. He was appointed maestro di capella there aged 34 and stayed until the age of 45. From then (1613) until his death in 1643 he was maestro di capella at the famous basilica di San Marco in Venezia. His job there was, of course, to compose and play spiritual music for the masses, but he never stopped composing operas which he had started to do at the court of Mantova. If Lasso was the greatest composer of the Renaissance, then Monteverdi was his worthy successor for the early Baroque age. Although his style is clearly influenced by Renaissance polyphony - after all, he did learn his craft in the era -, it is a style of its own. Some musicologists say that his L'Orfeo (1607) was the first opera ever, but this can be battled about. Whatever the case, he led the genre to a first climax in that he composed the music not according to strict academic rules, but but in order to emphasise the emotion required by the plot. No wonder he was especially interested in plots that contained a wide variety of down-to-earth emotions. The best example is his final masterwork, L'incoronazione di Poppea (1642), exceptional in that its protagonists are not ancient greek gods and heroes, but real people, and in that good does not triumph over evil. IMO no composer has ever after rendered emotions as directly, intuitively understandable as he did. No opera has ever really

Claudio Monteverdi Baptized 15 May 1567 in Cremona, Italy Died 29 November 1643 in Venice, Italy A prolific composer and musical pioneer, Monteverdi’s works serve as a spectacular bridge from the Renaissance to the Baroque period. Highlighted by his magnificent madrigals, operas, and devotional music, Monteverdi has even been labeled by some as the “creator of modern music.” Claudio Monteverdi was afforded a comfortable childhood through his father’s position as a doctor, surgeon, and pharmacist. The eldest of six, Monteverdi quickly expressed an interest in music. He studied composition under Marc’Antonio Ingegner and also displayed considerable talent as a singer and instrumentalist. By the young age of 15, Monteverdi published his first collection of works, embarking in earnest on a career as a musician and composer. In 1590, he received his first position of note and moved to Mantua to serve under famed aristocrat, Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga. The Mantuan court proved an encouraging influence on Monteverdi, who was aided by the presence of such masters as Flemish composer, Giaches de Wert. Some of these early compositional gains are evident in Monteverdi’s third book of Madrigals, published in 1592. Although initially positioned low within the Duke’s musical ranks, such efforts caused his reputation to rise considerably during the 1590s. This afforded Monteverdi the opportunity to travel as he accompanied the Duke on expeditions to Hungary and Holland.

His earliest published works, a set of three motifs, appeared when he was only 15. In 1590 he entered the service of the duke of Mantua, becoming choir master in the ducal court in 1601. Monteverdi's first opera, Orfeo, performed at Mantua in 1607, was revolutionary in its combination of dramatic power and expressive orchestral accompaniment. Of his next opera, Arianna (1608), only the celebrated lament, which Monteverdi himself arranged as a five-part madrigal, is extant. In 1613, Monteverdi was appointed choirmaster of St. Mark's, Venice, where he remained until his death. He took holy orders in 1632. Although he wrote mostly church music after settling in Venice, he continued to develop his dramatic gifts in many secular madrigals and dramatic cantatas such as Il combattimento di Tancredi e di Clorinda (1624). After the first public opera house opened in Venice in 1637, the aged Monteverdi produced his last operas, including

wurde am 15. Mai 1567 in Cremona geboren und starb am 29. November 1643 in Venedig.

Monteverdi can be justly considered one of the most powerful figures in the history of music. Much of his development as a composer may be observed in the eight books of secular madrigals published between
    1587 and 1638.
