Italian composer. Leading composer of the late Renaissance and Early Baroque, and the first great composer of operas.

Although Monteverdi can be viewed as both a composer of the Renaissance and of the Baroque, there is a continuity that runs through his works in both styles. Monteverdi was a dramatic composer, bringing a depth of meaning from the text he set that turned each of his pieces into a convincing musical and dramatic statement.
Monteverdi's career began at an early age. He published his first pieces, a collection of three-voice motets, at the age of fifteen. By 1591, when he went to Mantua as a musician for the Gonzaga court, he had already published books of "spritual madrigals" (1583), canzonettas (1584) and his first two books of madrigals (1587 and 1590). In Mantua he continued writing madrigals, and in 1607 produced his first work in the new genre of opera, his setting of Orfeo . In 1613, he was appointed maestro di cappella at St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice. He remained in Venice for the rest of his life, writing music in all genres, including his final opera

Monteverdi, Claudio 1567-1643, Italian composer; first great figure in the history of opera. His earliest published works, a set of three motifs, appeared when he was only 15. In 1590 he entered the service of the duke of Mantua, becoming choir master in the ducal court in 1601. Monteverdi's first opera, Orfeo, performed at Mantua in 1607, was revolutionary in its combination of dramatic power and expressive orchestral accompaniment. Of his next opera, Arianna (1608), only the celebrated lament, which Monteverdi himself arranged as a five-part madrigal, is extant. In 1613, Monteverdi was appointed choirmaster of St. Mark's, Venice, where he remained until his death. He took holy orders in 1632. Although he wrote mostly church music after settling in Venice, he continued to develop his dramatic gifts in many secular madrigals and dramatic cantatas such as Il combattimento di Tancredi e di Clorinda (1624). After the first public opera house opened in Venice in 1637, the aged Monteverdi produced his last operas, including

A revolutionary composer of the early Baroque period years, Claudio Monteverdi came to prominence around 1600. Inspiring the title "creator of modern music," he serves as the bridge between the 16th and 17th centuries. Primarily known as the last significant madrigal motets recitative style, Monteverdi claimed that "the text should be the master of the music, not the servant" (qtd. in Machlis & Forney 154). Derived from the Italian word "to recite," this style of singing consisted of mostly speaking with very little musical support. Employing this technique, therefore, allowed for proper understanding of the text’s meaning. He added drama and expression to this recitative, which became the main opera style in the early Baroque. Emotional expression was yet another musical innovation of Monteverdi. Because of his use of dissonance and instrumental color to express the feelings of the soul, this term is called "agitated style." Along this stylistic line, he brought into use the terms "
