Claudio Monteverdi: Innovator and madrigalist 1567-1643 In about 1800, Ludwig van Beethoven began forcing music into a new era, one of more daring harmony and greater emotional impact than had been fashionable in the previous few decades. Two hundred years earlier, Claudio Monteverdi had taken on exactly that same task and accomplished it brilliantly. Beethoven is a classical superstar, known even to people who dislike classical music. But Monteverdi has not won similar popularity, although he was an innovative genius with creative powers comparable to Beethoven's. Where to begin an appreciation of Monteverdi's work? Opera? He did not write the first opera, but he did write the first operatic masterpiece, ``L'Orfeo.'' Church music? Here Monteverdi created a distinguished body of work using all the latest techniques. But other well-known composers have written great operas and sacred music. The one genre to which Monteverdi applied himself with distinction but without competition from other enormously popular composers is the madrigal. Monteverdi wasn't the first or only great madrigal composer. In fact, he was one of the last; the madrigal fad died about the same time as Monteverdi (1643 is the composer's death year; madrigals have no tombstone but sputtered out in the mid-17th century).

Monteverdi, Claudio Giovanni Antonio Italian composer, highly important figure in the transition from Renaissance to baroque music. Born in Cremona, he became interested in the experimental musical dramas of Jacopo Peri , music director at the court of the Medici family. In 1607 Monteverdi's first opera, Orfeo, was produced. Orfeo surpassed all previous attempts at musical drama and established opera as a serious form of musical and dramatic expression. Through skillful use of vocal inflection, Monteverdi sought to express emotion as it would be expressed in the speech of an actor. The orchestra, considerably enlarged and varied, was used not merely as accompaniment but also to establish the moods of the scenes. In 1613 Monteverdi was appointed to one of the most important musical posts in Italy, choirmaster and conductor at Saint Mark's Cathedral in Venice. From this time on, he wrote numerous operas (many now lost), motets, madrigals, and masses. In madrigals written between 1614 and 1638 he moved away from the Renaissance ideal of equal-voiced polyphony toward newer styles emphasizing melody, bass line, and harmonic support.

He also wrote madrigals, motets, and sacred music, notably the Vespers Born in Cremona, he was in the service of the Duke of Mantua about 15911612, and was director of music at St Mark's, Venice, from 1613. He was first to use an orchestra and to reveal the dramatic possibilities of the operatic form. His first opera Orfeo was produced for the carnival at Mantua in 1607.

Monteverdi, Claudio (Giovanni Antonio) Born: Cremona, 15 May 1567 Died: Venice, 29 Nov 1643 Nationality: Italian composer There Monteverdi was active in reorganizing and improving the "cappella" as well as writing music for it, but he was also able to accept commissions from elsewhere, including some from Mantua, for example the ballet "Tirsi e Clori" (1616) and an opera, "La finta pazza Licori" (1627, not performed, now lost). He seems to have been less active afterc. 1629, but he was again in demand as an opera composer on the opening of public opera houses in Venice from 1637. In1640 "Arianna" was revived, and in the following two years "Il ritorno dUlisse in patria," "Le nozze dEnea con Lavinia" (lost) and "Lincoronazione di Poppea" were given first performances. In 1643 he visited Cremona and died shortly after his return to Venice. Monteverdi can be justly considered one of the most powerful figures in the history of music. Much of his development as a composer may be observed in the eight books of secular madrigals published between 1587 and 1638. The early books show his indebtedness to Marenzio in particular; the final one, "Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi," includes some pieces 'in genere rappresentativo' - "Il ballo delle ingrate," the "Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda" and the "Lamento della ninfa" - which draw on Monteverdi's experience as an opera composer. A ninth book was issued posthumously in 1651.
