ENG 105 Introduction to College Writing RECENT SCHOLARSHIP: BLACK HISTORY MONTH A Tribute To African American Women Composers by Dr. Sharon Shafer Uncovering the history of music by black women composers is a challenge partly because of inaccessible, out-of-print publications or music available only in manuscript. Black Women Composers: A Century of Piano Music, edited by Helen Walker-Hill, published by Hildegard Press in 1992, is a welcome resource along with Hildegard’s 1995 publication Art songs and Spirituals by African-American Women Composers, edited by Vivian Taylor. Anthology of Art Songs By Black American Composers, published by Edward B. Marks in 1977, includes a number of works by women as well. Walker-Hill begins the introduction to her collection with the question: "Why a collection of music exclusively by women composers of African descent?" By tracing the history of black women from 1893-1990, she provides the long missing recognition of their multiple contributions to American music. Walker-Hill states: “The reasons for such a collection lie in the present lack of awareness of black women composers on the part of the general public, and the scarcity of readily available music, particularly for solo piano.”(1)

African Americans have had a profound impact on the development of music in the United States. While their role in the history of American popular and folk music is now generally acknowledged and appreciated, their influence within the "classical" music world has received little attentioneven within the African American community. Afrocentric Voices focuses on African American performers and composers and on the vocal music forms they influenced, especially opera, art songs and Negro spirituals composed for concert performance. The musicians profiled here not only opened pathways for today's young African Americans through their own accomplishments, they advised and encouraged youth with lectures and master classes, articles and books. Many of them established scholarships and competitions for young musicians whose talents and desires lead them to seek out careers in "classical" music. These artists showedand continue to show the African American community that support of their young artists is important and does yield positive results. Presented here is an extensive bibliography of books and other research resources. There is a smallbut growinglist of
