He wrote 27 concertos and innumerable sonatas for the piano, and five concertos and over 30 sonatas for the violin. Fair enough - those were the instruments he played himself. But then there are concertos for flute, flute and harp, violin and viola, clarinet, horn, even bassoon. And what is there for solo cello? Not a note. Well, there are two fragments: 36 bars of a cello concerto in F, and 33 bars of an andantino for cello and piano. But that's it. It was as I was researching the Mozart chapter for my children's book, and reading about the composers Mozart knew, that it occurred to me that we cellists could grab some sort of consolation prize by playing the works of Mozart's friends. Many of them are all but forgotten today. But had any of them written for solo cello? Might there be enough material to put together a recital programme? It was around this time that I read that Leopold Mozart, Mozart's crusty, disapproving father, had at some stage written a divertimento for two cellos accompanied by double bass. Further, I knew that Mozart's son, Franz Xaver (also known, for commercial reasons, as Wolfgang Amadeus Jr, with the Jr usually printed in very small letters), had written a cello sonata that was published comparatively recently, although it is now out of print. So I set out on a quest for these sleeping beauties.

Juli 1844 in Karlsbad Franz Xaver Mozart wurde nur wenige Monate vor dem Tode seines Vaters geboren. Er soll ihm sehr ähnlich gesehen haben, und Constanze entschloss sich schon bald, dass Franz Xaver Musiker werden sollte. So bekam er denn schon mit zwei Jahren seinen ersten Musikunterricht. Constanze ließ ihn später auf den Namen Wolfgang Amadeus jr. umtaufen. Im Jahre 1796 besuchten Constanze und Franz Xaver Prag, wo sie bei der Familie Dussek wohnten. Bei diesem Aufenthalt soll Franz Xaver bei einem Konzert erstmals aufgetreten sein, als er spontan ein Lied aus der "Zauberflöte" sang. Die Dusseks verliessen bald Prag, und Franz Xaver blieb einige Zeit bei der Familie von Franz Niemetschek. 1797 kehrte Franz Xaver mit seiner Mutter nach Wien zurück. Um seine musikalische Ausbildung kümmerten sich nun Joseph Haydn und dessen Schüler Sigismund von Neukomm und Andreas Streicher. Etwas später zählten auch Johann Nepomuk Hummel (Klavier), Georg Albrechtsberger, der Abbé Georg Vogler (beide Komposition) sowie Antonio Salieri (Gesang) zu seinen Lehrern. Bereits im Jahre 1802 wurde Franz Xavers erstes Werk in Wien publiziert. Für den 11-Jährigen war dies ein grosser Erfolg. Seinen ersten offiziellen Auftritt (die Gesangseinlage in Prag nicht mitgerechnet) hatte er im April 1805 bei der Aufführung eines Klavierkonzerts seines Vaters (KV 467) sowie einer eigenen Kantate, die er zum 73.
