Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart From "Symphony No. 40" Researcher: Rachel Sahlman Artist: Dick Strandberg Musical genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born to Leopold Mozart and his wife Anna Maria Pertl in Salzburg, Austria on January 27, 1756. Leopold Mozart was a successful composer and violinist and served as assistant concertmaster at the Salzburg court. Mozart and his older sister Maria Anna "Nannerl" were the couple's only surviving children, and their musical education began at a very young age. The archbishop of the Salzburg court, Sigismund von Schrattenbach was very supportive of the Mozart children's remarkable activities. By the time Mozart was five years old, he began composing minuets. The next year, he and his sister were taken to Munich and Vienna to play a series of concert tours. Both children played the harpsichord, but Mozart had also mastered the violin. In 1763, when Mozart was seven years old, his father took leave of his position at the Salzburg court to take the family on an extended concert tour of western Europe. Mozart and his sister performed in the major musical centers, including Stuttgart, Mannheim, Mainz, Frankfurt, Brussels, Paris, London, and Amsterdam. They did not return to Salzburg until 1766. During this time, Mozart continued to compose, completing his first symphony at age nine and publishing his first sonatas the same year.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Leopold Mozart From Paris, the Mozarts came to London, where Wolfgang won the heart of Johann Christian Bach , chapel master. In London, Wolfgang gave several sensational performances at the Vauxhall Gardens which were the subject of great wonder. One year later, the Mozarts were once again on tour. They had come to Vienna where Wolfgang was commissioned to compose his first opera. Intrigues, created by envious composers (who realized their inferiority), prevented this first opera receiving a performance. In Vienna however, another charming theatrical work of Mozart, Bastien und Bastienne , an opéra-bouffe, was performed at the home of a friend, Dr. Messner. Miserere of Allegri which could be heard only in Rome during Holy Week performed by the papal choir. By papal decree it was forbidden to sing the work elsewhere, and its only existing copy was guarded slavishly by the papal choir. Any attempt to copy the song or reproduce it in any form was punishable by excommunication. Mozart, however, had heard the work only once when, returning home, he reproduced it in its entirety upon paper. No one has ever been able to even dream of duplicating this feat, even on a much smaller scale. This incomparable, mind-boggling task soon became the subject for awed whispers in Rome; it was not long before the Pope himself heard of this amazing achievement. The Pope summoned Mozart, but instead of punishing the young genius with excommunication, he showered praise upon him and gave him handsome gifts. A few months later, the Pope bestowed upon Mozart the Cross of the Order of the Golden Spur.

Januar 1756 in Salzburg geboren. Seine Mutter war Anna Maria Mozart, geborene Pertl, sein Vater der Komponist und Musiker Leopold Mozart. Der Vater organisierte die erste Konzertreise mit den Kindern , als Mozart sechs Jahre alt war, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , 7 Jahre alt Auf der zweiten Konzertreise begegnete Mozart dem Komponisten Johann Christian Bach. Aus dieser Zeit stammen Mozarts erste Synfonien ( KV 16 - 19 b ). 1769 - 1770 fuhr der Vater mit Nannerl und Mozart ( 13 Jahre ) nach Italien. Mozart wurde aufgrund seiner hervorragenden musikalischen Leistungen vom Papst zum Ritter vom Goldenen Sporn ernannt. Dies bedeutete eine ganz besondere Ehre.
