MOVING SIDEWALKS Flash (Akarma) cd MOVING UNITS Between Us And Them (Three One G) Here's a taste of these up and comers for you, sounding a lot like A Certain Ratio and Gang Of Four. I saw them in L.A. and everyone was loving it. They are dance-y and tight and the drummer hits really hard which helps with the danceability factor, but they are so obviously derivative of this certain sound that when you remove the dancefloor, it's hard to be impressed. Patrick Mantey
Patrick Mantey, Jack Baskin Professor of Computer Engineering, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The IEEE Board of Directors confers this prestigious honor on a select group of recipients with outstanding and extraordinary qualifications and experience in designated fields. In electing Mantey an IEEE Fellow, the board cited his "leadership in engineering education, in research and in academic-industrial-government projects."
Mantey came to UCSC in 1984 as the founding faculty member of the Department of Computer Engineering, bringing with him a wealth of experience in the Silicon Valley computer industry and in the region's educational institutions. He chaired the department until 1997, when he was appointed dean of the newly established School of Engineering. As inaugural dean of the Baskin School of Engineering from 1997 through 2000, Mantey guided the school through a period of rapid growth and increasing stature. He also serves on the University of California Council on Engineering Education.
Mantey received his B.S. (magna cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame, his M.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University, all in electrical engineering. He worked in IBM's Research Division in San Jose for 17 years and received numerous honors for his research in computer science. Among Mantey's honors are three IBM Outstanding Contribution Awards, an IBM Invention Achievement Award, and an IBM Patent Award. Throughout this period Mantey also lectured at Stanford and at San Jose State University.

Front Page
History of Electronic Music at UCSC
The UCSC electronic music program began in 1970, when faculty member Eric Regner commandeered a room at College V (Now Porter) and set up a newly acquired Moog synthesizer. Additional equipment was designed and built by students, most notably Bob Hoover, Michael Schippling and Carl Fravel. In 1973, Gordon Mumma joined the faculty as a lecturer to oversee electronic music and the studio moved to the basement of the J building (Now Theater Arts). The equipment roster was expanded significantly under an "innovative projects" grant and then reduced drastically by a burglary. In 1975 quarters in communications became available, offering security and space. Mumma's appointment was made permanent and Carl Fravel was engaged as the studio's first professional engineer. During the next five years tape composition and synthesis facilities were gradually enhanced by a series of construction projects that included the studio's first computer system. During this time a second studio was opened, along with a control room to allow use of the main studio as a recording space. The curriculum was expanded and regularized when a campus reorganization moved support from the colleges to discipline based departments. Typical enrollment was 12 to 15 students per quarter. In addition to offerings by Mumma, classes were taught by James Tenny, David Cope and Fravel. The program was also enriched by visits by Roger Reynolds, Maggie Payne, David Rosenbloom, Brian Eno, and John Cage.

Additional sound recording by Peg Ahrens, David Behrman, Peter Gordon and Marc Grafe. MUSIC WITH ROOTS IN THE AETHER is a music-theater piece in color video. It is the final version of an idea that I had thought about and worked on for a few years: to make a very large collaborative piece with other composers whose music I like. Originally I hoped that it could be realized as a live performance piece, in a much different form, but that was too impractical to think about for very long. Among the real choices, video is by far the best medium for many reasons.
The collaborative aspect of MUSIC WITH ROOTS IN THE AETHER is in the theater of the interviews, at least primarily! and I am indebted to all of the composers involved for their generosity in allowing me to portray them in this manner.
The piece turns out to be, in addition, a large scale documentation of an important stylistic that came into American concert music in about 1960. These composers of the "post-serial" / "post-Cage" movement have all made international reputations for the originality of their work and for their contributions to this area of musical compositions.

fugue states is an attempt to build on the techniques underlying the extraordinary music of composers such as David Tudor and Gordon Mumma. As such, the piece lies somewhere between an homage and a commentary. In the early 60's, Tudor prepared an electronic realization of John Cage's Variations II.

Light as Air
Formato 24 x 16,5 cm, 128 pagine, foto B/N e colore. Testo bilingue tedesco/inglese.
