Rainbow is soundscape in both a literal and a figurative sense. In natire, of course, a rainbow heralds the end of a storm and the reappearance of the sun. Rainbow begins with a quiet expressive oboe solo accompanied by a sustained A major chord (representing the sun), soon to be overwhelmed by the approaching storm which erupts violently in a fast tumultuous section.
Eventually the storm dies away and the rainbow appears; a lyrical theme accompanied by three major chords (the three primary colours of the spectrum: red, yellow, blue). When the rainbow fades, the sun blazes out; the A major chord accompanying the initial oboe melody, now played by all the violins. The brass adds a chorale of thanksgiving, bringing a mood of calm confident fulfillment.

Rorate Coeli for unaccompanied chorus, was written in 1973 in response to a commission from the National Federation of Music Societies in Great Britain. It was first performed by the Thomas Tallis choir in Greenwich.
It is a setting of two interleaved poems of the famous Scottish poet William Dunbar (written circa 1500). One poem is the Nativity poem of the title, the other is the poem about the Resurrection: 'Done is a battle on the dragon black'.
The work is framed by the rich chords of the opening line where full chorus is echoed by soloists. This setting of both poems simultaneously, reminiscent of medieval polytextural techniques, shows the future victory of the Resurrection along with present joy of the Nativity. The chords of the opening return at the end combined with an exultant Gloria.

Thea Musgrave: Orfeo II Thea Musgrave was born in Edinburgh in 1928. She studied at Edinburgh University where she won the Donald Francis Tovey Prize. After her graduation a scholarship allowed her to go to Paris, where she spent four years as a pupil of Nadia Boulanger during which period she won the Lili Boulanger Memorial Prize. In 1970 Musgrave was Guest Professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and since 1972 she has resided in the USA. She is currently Distinguished Professor at Queen's College of the City University of New York. In 1974 she received the Koussevitzky Award which resulted in the composition of Space Play, and in 1974-75 and again in 1982-3, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her husband Peter Mark, the renowned violist, is now conductor and General Director of the Virginia Opera, which has presented several of her stage works. Musgrave is herself increasingly active as a conductor of her own music, and has worked with most of the major British orchestras as well as several in the USA (Philadelphia Orchestra; San Francisco Symphony; San Diego Symphony, St.Paul Chamber Orchestra; Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra). Like many composers of her generation the generation that first began to attract notice in the middle 1950s Thea Musgrave came of age musically in that 'rite of passage' which, acknowledging the primary importance of Bartok and the second Viennese School, involved the rejection of tonality as traditionally conceived and with it its traditional expressive and form-building functions.

Her works have been performed by major orchestras throughout the world, often with her on the podium because most conductors don't want to take the time to learn women's music that tends to be modern and its interpretation can't be learned from phonograph records. (Also it is played so seldom that they don't feel there's any point to spending their time on it.)

    Book Description
Thea Musgrave ranks among the world's foremost living composers, and is widely known for the warmth, humor, and theatrical qualities of her music. Donald L. Hixon has prepared the first and only substantial bibliographical treatment of the composer, and the only complete listing of her works, with the assistance of Musgrave herself. The volume includes a brief biography; a complete list of her works and premieres, together with other notable selected performances, classified by genre and arranged alphabetically by title; a discography of commercially produced recordings; and an annotated bibliography of writings by and about Musgrave and her music. In addition, appendixes provide alphabetical and chronological access to the composer's music. An index of names and titles completes the volume.
