Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky
Russian composer Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky, b. Mar. 21 (N.S.), 1839, d. Mar. 28 (N.S.), 1881, is best known for the opera BORIS GODUNOV. Folk songs he heard as a child inspired him to improvise at the piano even before his mother started teaching him. Throughout his schooling in Saint Petersburg he studied piano with Anton Herke, developing considerable skill as a performer and improviser. He entered the Imperial Guard Cadets School in 1852 and the Preobrazhensky Regiment of Guards in 1856. During the winter of 1856-57 he attended Aleksandr Dargomyzhky's musicales, where he met Cesar Cui and Mily Balakirev. At the age of 19, an ardent idealist, Mussorgsky resigned his commission for a life of "meaningful endeavor"music. (later, he worked for some years in the civil service.) By the early 1860s, the group of composers known as The FIVEBalakirev, Cui, Mussorgsky, Aleksandr Borodin, and Nikolai RimskyKorsakovhad committed themselves to a nationalist Russian music.
Mussorgsky's music is distinctly Russian, yet it rarely relies directly on folk-song quotation. Instead, characteristic elements from folk music are abstracted to synthesize an original style of melody based on formulaic figures, harmony derived from folk heterophony, and rhythm founded on the irregular patterns of certain folk genres. His concern for precise communication of personality and emotion led to a new type of vocal parlando that succeeds in reproducing the essence of Russian speech in the mouths of his operatic characters.

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky Date/Place of Birth:  21 March 1839 in Karevo, Pskov district Personality:  A member of 'The Mighty Handful'. Mussorgsky never received any formal musical education during his childhood. After he graduated from the Cadet School of the Imperial Guards in 1856, he joined the Preobrazhensky Imperial Life Guards. Later, he resigned and was then appointed as a clerk in the civil service. However, during his army career, he indefatigably worked out his attempt in producing masterpieces despite his lack of musical knowledge. Mussorgsky's life was generally unorganized and miserable. Being an incurable alcoholic, he found his job loathsome and tedious - therefore often sank into deep depression and degradation. His health was erratic and occasionally, he sufferred from mental disorders that were sadly inimical to his concentration in composing. However, it is undubitably not a hindrance to him. Some considered that his miserable life and drinking habit might have culminated in producing a handful of masterpieces. In conclusion, Mussorgsky is now considered as one of the most single-minded Russian composers in 19th Century.

Piano Music Mussorgsky's 1874 suite Pictures at an Exhibition, a tribute to the versatile artist Hartman, has proved the most popular of all the composer's works, both in its original version for piano and in colourful orchestral versions, of which that by Maurice Ravel has proved the most generally acceptable. Linked by Promenades for the visitor to the exhibition, Mussorgsky represents in music a varied collection, from the Market of Limoges and the Catacombs to the final Great Gate of Kiev, a monumental translation into music of an architectural design for a triumphal gateway. Vocal Music Mussorgsky wrote a number of choral works and songs, many of the latter of considerable interest, including the group The Nursery. The Song of the Flea, based on Goethe's Mephistophelean song in Faust, is a bass favourite.

Introduction (born Karevo, 21 March 1839; died St. Petersburg, 28 March 1881). In 1858 Mussorgsky passed through a nervous or spiritual crisis and resigned his army commission. A visit to Moscow in 1859 fired his patriotic imagination and his compositional energies, but although his music began to enjoy public performances his nervous irritability was not entirely calmed. The emancipation of the serfs in March 1861 obliged him to spend most of the next two years helping manage the family estate; a symphony came to nothing and Stasov and Balakirev agreed that 'Mussorgsky is almost an idiot'. But he contiuned to compose and in 1863-6 worked on the libretto and music of an opera, , which he never completed. At this time he served at the Ministry of Communications and lived in a commune with five other young men who ardently cultivated and exchanged advanced ideas about art, religion, philosophy and politics. Mussorgsky's private and public lives eventually came into conflict. In 1865 he underwent his first serious bout of dipsomania (probably as a reaction to his mother's death that year) and in 1867 he was dismissed from his post. Mussorgsky spent summer 1867 at his brother's country house at Minkino, where he wrote, among other things, his first important orchestral work
