PER NORGARD - 1932 DENMARK For more than 25 years he has been among the leading figures involved in the development of Danish music, not only because of the strikingly expressive power of his music, but also due to the influence he has had, in his capacity as teacher, upon the younger generation of Danish composers. His extensive writings on subjects such as aesthetics, philosophy of music and politics of music have had a substantial effect upon the cultural debate of the times. In the 1950's Per Norgård's music bore the mark of his teachers (especially Vagn Holmboe) and of his study of the Sibelius symphonic works. Per Norgård became a spokesman for the cultivation of, in his own words, 'the universe of the Nordic temperament'. Between The title of each movement suggests one aspect of the relationship between soloist and orchestra. In the first movement, the soloist is caught up in a conflict between the expression of inner feelings (solo) and influences from external sources (orchestra), the latter of which finally dominates. The second movement starts with the solist in a simple accompanying role: but after a turning point in the middle of the movement the soloist assumes a dominating role. In the final movement a balance is finally acheived, with the soloist at last being on 'equal terms' with the orchestra. 4 Fragments The work was composed during the years 1959-61 and premiered by the composer in february 1962.In this piano suite, which has an approximate duration of 5 minutes, fragments nos 3 and 4 contain material based on the infinity series but personally I regard nos 1 and 2 as more anticipating for my later work because of their transparent 'unison polyphony' and ambiguous rhythmics.

Opera Review Nuit des Hommes Almeida Theatre, London 12-15 July, 2000 (RW) Nuit des Hommes The Labyrinth ; the investigations into the melodic and harmonic properties of the 'infinity series' in 1972's Gilgamesh ; the wide-ranging synthesis of opera and ballet in 1979's Siddharta The Divine Circus Nuit des Hommes Synoptically, the work surveys the historical conditions in Europe that lead to the outbreak of war in 1914, and the overwhelming self-belief and self-righteousness that engenders conflict and collapse. The singers assume complementary roles: in Act One - 'everyman' Wilhelm and Alice, Soldier and War Correspondent; in Act Two, Soldier and Kali, the jingoist and personification of war lust, whose stark repeated cry, 'demain l'assault', marks the musical and theatrical climax. The ending is one of recognition - of what has occured and of what will now follow. He has written songs regularly and consistently throughout his life and his various stylistic changes, which one finds in more public works like the symphonies, are reflected also in these pieces. I have always admired Norgard’s First Symphony ‘ Sinfonia austera ’ of 1955, and whilst assimilating this CD I listened again to that work (Chandos CHAN 9450). Unsentimental, craggy and yes, austere. I was expecting to hear that work reflected in the songs from the early 1950s, written when the composer was still a pupil of Vagn Holmboe. I did not listen to this CD in the recorded order but began with the Op.2, settings of Paul la Cour (tracks 6-8). This is tough music just as expected. The excellent CD booklet notes by Ivan Hansen talk of their "autumn-dark" mood, and of "their weighty character". Like other settings in this collection these songs are full of impressions of Jutland with its "resentful rocks, ripped from the bowels of the earth". This granitic music is the Norgard I know, but somehow can’t love.
