Ockeghem was one of the most respected composers of the fifteenth century, and along with Guillaume Dufay and Josquin Des Prez , one of the most influential composers of the early Renaissance. Ockeghem was probably born in the current Belgium, in what was then the Duchy of Burgundy, estimates for the year of his birth vary from 1400 to c.1430, but written sources from the period indicate that he was a very old man by the time of his death in 1497. He was premier chaplain to three kings of France, as well as holding the prestigious position of treasurer at the great cathedral and monastery of St. Martin de Tours. During his lifetime, Ockeghem was known for his personal refinement and fine bass voice.
He was long identified as one of the fathers of Renaissance music, his influence finally fading only years after his death. Ockeghem's surviving musical output is relatively small, comprising a mere handful of motets, several masses, and a couple of dozen secular chansons. His style is marked by a careful handling of vocal ranges in a primarily four-voice texture, and an emphasis on complex and expressive bass lines.

JOHANNES OCKEGHEM
(ca. 1410-1497)
  • Member of Burgundian School
  • Treasurer of Royal Abbey at St. Martin
  • Composer of Motets, Chansons, Masses
Josquin Desprez Ockeghem wrote ten motets chansons texture , or sound resulting from the combination of voices, is usually dense. Ockeghem also wrote special types of Masses. Based on a preexisting melody, one type is the cantus firmus Mass. These melodies usually came from popular secular pieces of the era. In one particular Mass, Ockeghem used a chanson tune from the secular text line "My mistress and my own dear love," substituting the Mass line "And on earth, peace to men of good will" (Grout 171). Other works Johannes wrote were called Masses in modes , or pieces titled by the first two notes presented in the lowest voice. A third, general religious category in which he composed was called Missa sine nomine , translating as "Mass without a name." This common title was used for those Masses not identified with anything familiar to the composer or audience. A writer for the Ragionamenti accademici named Cosimo Bartoli said in 1567: "I know well that Ockeghem was, so to speak, the first who in these times rediscovered music, which had almost entirely died out not in otherwise than Donatello, who in his time rediscovered sculpture" (Grout 163). Johannes Ockeghem died in 1497, and Josquin wrote a musical lament for his death. It was scored for four voices to the text of the Requiem Mass "Grant them eternal rest."
