IIID: The Netherlanders to Ockeghem As the Middle Ages drew to a close, music was in a state of separatism, mannerism, and confusion. From this disorder Dunstable and Dufay forged a new International style that was to serve as a model for well over a century. Because virtually all the important composers writing in this style emanated from what is today central and southern Holland, Belgium, and the northeastern portion of France, they have commonly been labelled Franco-Flemish, and the century 1450-1550 is known as "the age of the Netherlanders." Most of these composers worked for the Emperor, the King of France, the Pope, or at one of the Italian courts (while Italy did not actually produce any major composers during this period, it did provide employment for some of the greatest). The most significant composers of the generation after Dufay and Binchois were Antoine Busnois and Johannes Ockeghem . In many respects their careers paralleled those of their predecessors. Busnois, like Binchois, spent most of his career in the employ of the Burgundian court, and excelled in elegant and refined chansons, often to hedonistic texts of his own creation. But unquestionably the dominant musician of his era, and the successor to Dufay as master of the large-scale form, was Ockeghem. Ockeghem, Johannes He was premier chaplain to three kings of France, as well as holding the prestigious position of treasurer at the great cathedral and monastery of St. Martin de Tours. During his lifetime, Ockeghem was known for his personal refinement and fine bass voice. After his death, a famous poem by Guillaume Cretin (set to music by Josquin Desprez) praised his character, skill, and influence. He was long identified as one of the fathers of Renaissance music, his influence finally fading only years after his death. Ockeghem's surviving musical output is relatively small, comprising a mere handful of motets, several masses, and a couple of dozen secular chansons. His style is marked by a careful handling of vocal ranges in a primarily four-voice texture, and an emphasis on complex and expressive bass lines. This emphasis on lower textures opened up a new world of structural possibilities for Renaissance composers, and Ockeghem's compositions exploit these potentials in a variety of ways. Today he is best known for his masses and his ability to integrate large-scale forms in ways which were as unparalleled then as they are now. By the sixteenth century, Ockeghem was known primarily as an accomplished technical master, famous for his complex lines and polyphonic structures, which had the appearance of intractable puzzles for all but the most accomplished musicians.

Alongside Binchois, Du Fay, Busnoys and Josquin Although the number of known works attributed to Ockeghem is surprisingly small in view of the length of his life and the esteem in which he was held, his masses constitute an imposing repertory. He wrote a number of masses deploying a varied treatment of cantus-firmus melodies and complex polyphony. His motets, though few in number, display perhaps even greater inventiveness than his masses, no doubt because the genre was itself in a state of stylistic redefinition during much of the 15th century. In his Alma Redemptoris mater the antiphon melody is heard in an upper voice, as in a treble-dominated plainsong setting, but with the addition of a fourth part in an unusually high range above it. He also composed a number of secular chanson based on vernacular poetry. Like his contemporaries, he adhered to tradition, but no other 15th-century master seems to have handled with as much freedom compositional procedures such as head-motifs, cantus firmi and canonic imitation, nor to have treated established musical genres (mass, motet and chanson) with such subtly inventive creativity.
