Jacques Offenbach's real name was Jakob Wiener. He was born at Cologne,Germany in 1819, and died in Paris in 1880, aged sixtyone.

Jacques Offenbach's real name was Jakob Wiener . He was born at Cologne, Germany in 1819, and died in Paris in 1880, aged sixty-one. He was the son of a Jewish cantor. Offenbach moved to Paris in 1833 to study the cello. He earned his living playing cello in the orchestra of the Opera Comique . In 1850 he became conductor of the Theatre Francais . Gradually, he became known to the public as a composer of light and humorous operettas. He founded a theatrical company in 1855, the Bouffes-Parisiens , which staged many of his operettas, and he managed the company for many years. He became a French citizen in 1860. In 1876, he toured the United States. He also toured Britain, and his many works had great popularity everywhere. Offenbach completed more than ninety works for the stage. His first success was Orpheus in the Underworld (1858). His most popular compositions appeared in the 1860's, notably La Belle Helene La Vie Parisienne La Grande-duchesse de Gerolstein (1867) and La Perichole Offenbach's last work was The Tales of Hoffmann . The production of this work was in preparation when he died - three months too early to witness its reception, an experience to which he had greatly looked forward.

Gestorben: 5. Oktober 1880 in Paris Offenbach wurde 1850 Kapellmeister am Théàtre Française und eröffnete 1855 eine eigene Bühne, an der er Singspiele aufführte. Der führende Meister der klassischen Pariser Operette mit zeitkritischem Einschlag schuf mehr als 100 Operetten, u.a. "Orpheus in der Unterwelt" (1858), "Die schöne Helena" (1864) und "Ritter Blaubart" (1866). Sie zeichnen sich durch eingängige Melodien und zündende Rhythmen aus. Seine einzige Oper "Hoffmanns Erzählungen" komponierte Offenbach, als er bereits von schwerer Krankheit gezeichnet war. Seit 1833 in Paris, zunächst als Konservatoriumsschüler, dann als Kapellmeister und seit 55 als Theaterdirektor. Einen der Schöpfer der parodistischen Operette: "Orpheus in der Unterwelt" (58), "Die schöne Helena" (64), "Pariser Leben" (66) und "Blaubart" (66); romantische Oper: "Hoffmanns Erzählungen" (postum 81) aktualisiert durch sieber-online am:

Biografía:
Compositor francés, autor de operetas que parodiaban la política y las debilidades del Segundo Imperio de Napoleón III. Nació en Colonia, Alemania, y su verdadero nombre era Jacob Ebers. Adoptó el seudónimo de su padre, un judío nacido en Offenbach del Main, cerca de Frankfurt. Estudió vilolonchelo en el conservatorio de París y en 1837 trabajó como violonchelista en la Opéra Comique de esta ciudad, donde en 1853 se estrenó su primera opereta en un acto, Pepito. En 1844 se había casado con Herminie d'Alcain tras convertirse al catolicismo. En 1849 fue nombrado director del Théâtre Français y más tarde dirigió el teatro Bouffes-Parisiens (1855-1861) y el Théâtre de la Gaité (1873-1875). En 1875 ya había compuesto 90 operetas, la mayoría de ellas con libretos del escritor francés Ludovic Halévy. Las obras de Offenbach más interpretadas hoy son Orfeo en los infiernos (1858) con su famoso cancán, La Périchole (1868) y su ópera lírica Los cuentos de Hoffmann (1880, galardonada de forma póstuma en 1881) con su famosa barcarola. El estilo musical de Offenbach es alegre e ingenioso. Con sus operetas (término acuñado por él en 1856 para La rose de Saint-Flour) impuso un género que fue imitado por Johann Strauss hijo, Arthur Sullivan y Franz Lehár y por otros autores de musicales del siglo XX. El compositor no pudo ver el estreno de su ópera Los cuentos de Hoffmann, pues murió tres meses antes en París. ©
