Biography
Carl Orff
Composer Germany Born 10 Jul 1895
Died 29 Mar 1982
Orff's early achievements were in the fields of musical education, and in 'Schulwerk' ('Works for Schools') his trademarks are plain - strong simple rhythms and short repeated melodies, all instantly memorable. Orff, who was born and died in Munich, disowned all the music he wrote up to 1937, but the same ingredients that made 'Schulwerk' a success made his 'Carmina Burana', written that year, a worldwide popular classic. The bawdy medieval monastic texts with Orff's blockbusting music have proved one of classical music's best sellers.

. "Als mich dein Wandeln an den Tod verzückte"
    Text by Franz Werfel (1890-1945)
Music by Carl Orff, 1920 Als mich dein Dasein tränenwärts entrückte,
. "Weil' auf mir, du dunkles Auge" Text by Nikolaus Lenau (1802-1850) Music by Carl Orff, "Bitte" See also: Leopold Damrosch (1832-1885), "Bitte", op. 5 no. 1

Orff, Carl Carmina Burana (1937), a scenic oratorio derived from a group of medieval poems in German and Latin (see also Goliardic songs ). This oratorio forms part of a trilogy that includes Catulli Carmina (1943), a scenic cantata based on the works of Catullus; and Trionfo di Afrodite (1953). Orff's other works include the operas Der Mond [the moon] (1939) and Die Kluge [the wise woman] (1943). From 1960 he was head of the Orff School for Music in Munich. Carl Orff
Carl Orff (July 10, 1895, Munich - March 29, 1982 Munich), composer. Orff is most known for Carmina Burana (1938), a 'scenic cantata'. It is the first of a trilogy that also included Catulli Carmina and Triunfo de Aphrodite, which reflected his interest in Medieval German poetry. While "modern" in some of his compositional techniques, Orff in the trilogy is able to capture the spirit of the Medieval period with infectious rhythms and easy tonalities. The Medieval poems written in an early form of German and in Latin were often racy, but without descending into smut for smut's sake.
In pedagogical circles he is probably best remembered for his Schulwerk (1930-35), translated into English as his Music for Children. Its simple musical instrumentation allowed even untutored child musicians to perform the piece with relative ease. Much of his life Orff worked with children, using music as an educational tool. Both melody and rhythm are often determined by the words, in either the German or English production. There is a feeling of enthusiasm that echo the joy the performers obviously feel in creating such beautiful music.
Orff was reluctant to call any of his works just operas. For example, he called
