Johann Pachelbel
Like Allegri, whose famed Miserere eclipsed everything else he achieved in his career, Johann Pachelbel's name is automatically linked to the ever-popular three- part Canon in D. Born in Nuremberg in the autumn of 1653, Pachelbel showed an early appetite for learning. In addition to school, he had two music teachers, one who introduced him to the fundamentals of music while the other taught him to play and compose. He was briefly at the University of Altdorf before taking a position in 1673 as assistant organist at the cathedral of St Stephen in Vienna. Four years later he became the court organist to the Duke of Saxe-Eisenach. He became restless here, and requesting a letter of reference from his employers, left after a year. His reference described him as a 'rare and perfect virtuoso'. Subsequently Pachelbel became the organist at the Erfurt Predigerkirche, where he spent 12 happy years. His first wife succumbed to the plague, but within a year he had remarried and subsequently had seven children. This period was a time of increasing contentment and creative growth. In 1690, he became organist in Stuttgart at the Wurttemberg Court. The threat of a French invasion curtailed this position two years later, and Pachelbel returned to his hometown of Nuremberg to take up the post of organist at St Sebald. There he lived out his final decade writing ever more imposing works. It is not known when Pachelbel composed his famous Canon.

Johann Pachelbel 1653-1706
Johann Pachelbel began his musical instruction under Schwemmer and later at the Universities of Altdorf and Ratisbon. In 1671 Johann moved to Vienna where he became student and deputy organist to Kerll at the Imperial chapel. In 1677 he was organist for one year in Eisenach the city of Bach's birth eight years later. The following year he moved to Erfurt, where his son, Hieronymus , was born. While in Erfurt he taught Johann Christoph Bach , Sebastian's older brother and guardian in Ohrdruf when the Bach parents died. In 1690 Pachelbel became court organist at Stuttgart. Two years later Johann took his final post, in Nuremburg. Johann Pachelbel's repertory is the stylistic ancestor of J. S. Bach's, particularly his technique of chorale variation Carl Philipp Emanuel named Pachelbel as a composer whose works his father had admired.

Pachelbel, Johann (1653 - 1706)
An important German composer of Protestant church music, Johann Pachelbel brought to his art an element acquired from acquaintance with Catholic forms of music in Vienna and Italy. He was employed as an organist at Erfurt, then at court in Stuttgart, as organist at Gotha and finally from 1695 in his native city of Nuremberg, where he died in 1706. Chamber Music Although chamber music represents only a small part of Pachelbel's achievement as a composer, his Canon and Gigue have in recent years won enormous popularity. Recommended Recording
Naxos 8.550104
Organ Music As a leading performer on the instrument, Pachelbel wrote a considerable amount of organ music, including a series of organ chorales, based on well known Lutheran hymn-tunes. Other organ music includes works in forms later used by Bach, fugues, toccatas, fantasias and a set of six chaconnes. Church Music Pachelbel composed a number of sacred concertos, works for voices and a small group of instruments on sacred texts as well as a number of Magnificat and other settings for the evening service of Vespers.

38. Beyond The Canon On Recording Johann Pachelbel's Complete Works For Organ
Article from Continuo Magazine by Joseph Payne.
http://www.continuo.com/oct97/pachel1.htm

complete works for organ
One of the most celebrated composers of his generation, Johann Pachelbel (1653-1707) is chiefly remembered for his over-popular Canon in D and because of his influential association with the Bach family. Equally significant is his vast output of music for keyboard. The repertoire includes chorales, fugues - 94 on the Magnificat alone! -preludes, toccatas, fantasias, chaconnes, and many sets of variations on secular and liturgical tunes. Recently, the noted Boston musician Joseph Payne completed recording all of Pachelbel Castle Church, Altenburg (Thuringa) Since each organ imparts its own character to the music, it was essential that the recording technique remain as uniform as possible throughout the series in order to capture, with utmost fidelity, these relative differences and contrasts. At almost every site, the microphones were placed on a horizontal plane with the pipes, at a distance of about one-third of the room away. Usually this position afforded an optimal listening point. This same "documentary" approach of recording was always used, where the spatial distinction between, say, a R and Hauptwerk And so it is with the organs demonstrated in these recordings. In all, they encompass a wide range of styles and history, showing that the art of organ building was never static. Though many were repaired, modified, and augmented several times before their recent restorations, each organ will heighten our sensual, spiritual, and emotional response as we survey one of the most extraordinary bodies of literature from the seventeenth century. When we asked which organ might suit this music best, an esteemed musicologist replied, "A good organ!" Given the popularity of Pachelbel’s music long after his death, it would seem plausible to assume that his organ works were played on a large variety of "good" instruments.
