Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (?1525-1594)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born ?Palestrina, ?3 Feb. 1525 - 2 February 1526; died Rome, 2 February 1594). He was a pupil of Mallapert and Firmin Lebel at St. Maria Maggiore, Rome, where he was a choirboy from at least 1537. He became organist of St. Agapito, Palestrina, in 1544 and in 1547 married Lucrezia Gori there; they had three children. After the Bishop of Palestrina's election as pope (Julius III) he was appointed maestro di cappella of the Cappella Giulia in Rome (1551), where he issued his first works (masses, 1554); during 1555 he also sang in the Cappella Sistina. Two of Rome's greatest churches then procured him as maestro di cappella , St. John Lateran (1555-60) and St. Maria Maggiore (1561-6), and in 1564 Cardinal Ippolito d'Este engaged him to oversee the music at his Tivoli estate. From 1566 he also taught music at the Seminario Romano, before returning to the Cappella Giulia as maestro in 1571.

Giovanni Pierluigi Da Palestrina
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was born in 1525 and died in 1594. His surname comes from the place of his birtha small town twenty miles from Rome. A choirboy at S. Maria Maggiore, Rome, in 1537, he was appointed organist and maestro di cappella at Palestrina cathedral in 1544 under the Bishop who later became Pope Julius III. After seven years his former summoned him to Rome as chapelmaster of the Cappella Giulia at St Peter's, in which post he served from 1551 to 1554 and again from 1571 until his death His choir here consisted of Italians, being thus sharply distinguished from the choir of the Sistine Chapel, which since Dufay 's days and before had been almost entirely recruited from Flanders. Soon after Palestrina's appointment he brought out a book of masses, which are the first ever dedicated to a Pope by an Italian composer. The fact may be remembered as a symbol of the rising influence of the native school.
A few years later Palestrina was appointed a member of the Sistine Choir, but was subsequently dismissed by Paul IV because of his unacceptable married status, and was quickly retired with a pension. After other appointments, as choirmaster at St John Lateran in 1555-60, at S. Maria Maggiore in 1561-6, and at the Roman Seminary in 1566-71. As earlier mentioned, Palestrina returned to the Julian Chapel in 1571 as chapelmaster, remaining there until he died in 1594. In the 1560s he had also directed concerts at the Tivoli villa of Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, and had a Mass commissioned by the Duke of Mantua, who tried to persuade him to leave Rome for the Mantuan court.

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
The greatest master of Roman Catholic church music, Palestrina was the name of a small town near Rome where he was born. Palestrina began his musical training when he was seven, starting out as a choirboy in the local cathedral similar to many other composers. He traveled to Rome, still a member of the choir, and continued to study music there. In 1544, Palestrina returned to his hometown, showing everything he learned, as organist and choirmaster of the cathedral. When the bishop of the cathedral became Pope Julius III, he took Palestrina with him to Rome as choirmaster of the Cappella Giulia. Palestrina's first book of masses, printed in 1554, was dedicated to the pope, and the pope returned the favor by assigning him as a member of the Sistine Choir in the Vatican. Palestrina went on to serve as music director of several churches after he was relieved from his position in the Sistine Choir once the pope was replaced. When offered posts at several courts of music, he demanded such a high salary that he was never hired. In 1571, he returned to the Cappella Giulia, where he stayed as music director for the rest of his life. The works of Palestrina were like those of no other. He inhabited the musical style that had started in fifteenth century Netherlands. He used that smooth, echo of voices to create his own style of characteristic styles of the church, the type of music one ruminates about when visiting the great cathedrals of Rome, or the vast hillsides of Italy. Such a smooth sound to the ears, combined with natural human voices implies an ethereal, majestic mood to Palestrina's works. The long and flowing melodies match with the ingenious harmonies, sending the listener to a deep relaxation of vast unspecified thinking.

Since the early 1970s The Hilliard Ensemble have championed Early Music with an imaginative vision and austere purity of sound. Initially viewed with considerable suspicion by both classical and jazz fraternities, the albums Officium , and later Mnemosyne , recorded with the saxophonist and fellow ECM artist, Jan Gabarek, proved a breakthrough, vastly increasing popular interest in early sacred song. In Paradisum Litany , while an acclaimed recording of Victoria's Officium Defunctorum is available from the Gabrieli Consort under Paul McCreesh. Gary S. Dalkin

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
The greatest composer of liturgical music of all time, born at Palestrina (ancient Praeneste) in 1514 or 1515, according to Baini, Riemann, and others, according to Haberl In the course of the same year, Palestrina published a volume of madrigals. The texts of some of these the composer himself in later years considered too free. In the dedication of his setting of the Canticle of Canticles to Gregory XIII , he expresses not only regret but repentance, for having caused scandal by this publication. Marcellus II, as cardinal, had protected and admired Palestrina, but died after a reign of only twenty-one days. Paul IV, shortly after his accession, re-inforced the former rules for the government of the papal choir. Besides Palestrina, there were two other lay married members in the choir. All were dismissed with a small pension, in spite of the understanding that these singers were engaged for life. The worry and hardship caused by the dismissal brought on a severe illness; restored, the composer took charge, 1 October, 1555, of the choir at St. John Lateran, where he remained until February, 1561. During this period he wrote, beside Lamentations and Magnificats, the famous "Improperia". Their performance by the papal choir on Good Friday was ordered by Paul IV, and they have remained in its repertoire for Holy Week ever since. This production greatly increased Palestrina's fame. In 1561 he asked the chapter of St. John Lateran for an increase in salary, in view of his growing needs and the expense of publishing his works. Refused, he accepted a similar post at Santa Maria Maggiore, which he held until 1571. It is not know at what period of his career Palestrina came under the influence of

Palestrina was a pupil of Mallapert and Firmin Lebel at Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome, where he was a choirboy from (at least) 1537. He became organist of Sante Agapite, Palestrina, in 1544, and in 1547 he married Lucrezia Gori there; they had three children. Following the Bishop of Palestrina's election as pope (Julius III) he was appointed maestro di cappella of the Cappella Guilia in Rome (1551), where he issued his first works; during 1555 he also sang in the Cappella Sistina. Two of Rome's greatest churches then procured him as maestro di cappella, St John Lateran (1555-60), and Santa Maria Maggiore (1561-6), and in 1564, Cardinal Ippolito d'Este engaged him to oversee music at his Tivoli estate. From 1566 he also taught music at the Seminario Romano, before returning to the Cappella Giulia as maestro in 1571.
During the 1560s and 1570s, Palestrina's fame and influence increased rapidly through his published works. His reputation was so great that in 1577 he was asked to rewrite the church's main plainchant books, following the Council of Trent's guidelines. His most well know mass, Missa Papae Marcelli, may have been composed to satisfy the council's requirements for musical cogency and textual intelligibility. He was always in tune with the Counter-Reformation spirit; after his wife's death in 1580 he considered taking holy orders, but instead married a year later. His second wife was Virginia Dormoli, the widow of a wealthy fur merchant, and it was through his investments in her business that his financial strains were eased, and his last years at St Peter's were amongst his most productive.
