Giovanni da Palestrina (c. 1525-1594) In the course of the same year, Palestrina published a volume of madrigals. The texts of some of these the composer himself in later years considered too free. In the dedication of his setting of the Canticle of Canticles to Gregory XIII, he expresses not only regret but repentance, for having caused scandal by this publication. Marcellus II, as cardinal, had protected and admired Palestrina, but died after a reign of only twenty-one days. Paul IV, shortly after his accession, re-inforced the former rules for the government of the papal choir. Besides Palestrina, there were two other lay married members in the choir. All were dismissed with a small pension, in spite of the understanding that these singers were engaged for life. The foundation of his reform is the two principles legitimately deduced from the only references to church music in the Tridentine decrees: the elimination of all themes of reminiscent of, or resembling, secular music; the rejection of musical forms and elaborations tending to mutilate or obscure the liturgical text. ecclesiastical year. Composers P: 7 of 75 prev. table next Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594) According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music , Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was an Italian composer who took the name Palestrina from his native town, near Rome. Was choirboy, and spent all, his musical life in service of the Church; but also proved an able businessman. Became choirmaster of the Julian Chapel at St Peter's, Rome, and a member of the Papal chapel; later held other high positions. Much honoured in his lifetime, and described on his coffin as "Prince of Music". After his first wife died he entered the priesthood, but abandoned it and remarried. Apart from a few madrigals his works are all Latin church music for unaccompanied choir - nearly 100 Masses, motets, a Stabat Mater, psalms etc. Posthumous veneration of him led to various fanciful legends. Palestrina, Giovanni Pierluigi da Italian composer, ranked among the greatest of Renaissance composers. Palestrina was born in the town of Palestrina, southeast of Rome. In 1544 he became organist and choir director at the cathedral in Palestrina, leaving in 1551 to become choirmaster at the Julian Chapel at Saint Peter's in Rome. His music remained close to the mystical and highly ritualized spirit of the church. The serenity of Palestrina's style arises from several technical sources. His music is vocal; no parts are written specifically for instruments. All the voice parts have a similar character, producing a homogeneous sound. Although Palestrina used only a few chords in any one composition, he altered the manner in which the individual tones of each chord were spaced among the various voice parts. He thus achieved subtle changes while maintaining a general feeling of constancy. Palestrina's religious music includes 102 masses, 250 motets, 35 magnificats, 68 offertories, 45 hymns, and other works. His secular works include many madrigals.

It. composer who took his name from his birthplace. Chorister at S. Maria Maggiore, Rome, in 1537. Studied in Rome c. 1540. Organist and choirmaster, Palestrina, 1544. In 1550 the Bishop became Pope Julius III and in 1551 summoned Palestrina to Rome as choirmaster of Cappella Giulia, a nursery for Sistine Choir. The following year Palestrina published his first book of Masses. In 1555 a new Pope, Paul IV, dismissed Palestrina and two others from the Sistine Choir because they were married. Palestrina was appointed choirmaster of St John Lateran in 1555 in succession to Lassus. For this church he wrote his Lamentations . He resigned in 1560 over dissatisfaction with the way the choirboys were fed, becoming choirmaster of S. Maria Maggiore in 1561. He pubd. his first book of motets 2 years later. In 1567 he resigned to enter service of Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, having become dissatisfied with the papal reforms of church mus. which rendered 2 of his masses unliturgical because they contained words foreign to the mass.
