The way in which the individual comes to terms with these issues (or fails to do so) determines his attitude towards life - whether consciously or unconsciously. "With its great size, Kapoor's sculpture shatters not only concepts of space, but also concepts of time. The boundary between time and timelessness no longer seems so important. "This is the subject underlying my composition LamenTate. Accordingly, I have written a lamento - not for the dead, but for the living, who have to deal with these issues for themselves. "In the presence of Kapoor's work I sense a completeness in its harmonious and naturally flowing form, and in the rather paradoxical effect of floating lightness in spite of overwhelming dimensions. With its trumpet-like form, the sculpture is suggestive of music. This larger-than-life "trumpet-corpse" could be proclaiming the end of the world. "In his sculpture, Anish Kapoor has caught very well the tragic element of the Marsyas myth. As in a relay race, I received the baton directly from the hands of the sculpture - and not from the legend itself. My composition is somewhat more indirectly based on the Marsyas myth. It has been conceived neither as an illustration nor as a decoration of the sculpture; it concentrates rather on its own, purely musical substance, in order to communicate the message I associate with Kapoor's creation.

The most obvious point of comparison is clearly Kate Bush, but this is less a matter of derivation than of unmistakable parities of scope and ambition. If there is half of Kate in Tori, actually, then perhaps Emily has begun with the other half. Where Tori is confrontational and visceral, Emily is guarded and literary; where Tori speaks ( thinks , perhaps) in a private code, Emily's stories are couched in allusion and the dramatis personae of legend. Where Kate is dancing with Hitler and Douglas Fairbanks, emerging from her open pages, Emily casts herself among Guineveres and Cleopatras, drawing you in and on like a glimpse of a figure vanishing into a topiary maze.

Records: Arvo Part's Litany By Anika Singh The last time most of us heard a minimalist composition was in the episode of South Park where Philip Glass's music was used as the score for the Christmas pageant. South Park 's use of Glass's genre was certainly successful; it was also hysterical. Litany , Arvo Part's newest release, also draws on Glass's work, though the intent is far from satirical. Part, a composer of the mystical minimalist school, combines medieval chants with 20th century minimalism; this formula has proved beautifully successful in past works, such as his 1993 Te Deum . Unfortunately, Litany , the world premiere recording which was released at the end of last year, fails to be as powerful or musically successful as its predecessors. The text of Litany comes from 24 short prayersone for each hour of the daythat date from the fourth century. Unfortunately, however, the importance of time is lost in the piece. For a massive middle portion of the work, movement stops and the sound is stagnant. Litany begins in a fashion that is characteristically Part sparse but effective. Two violins introduce a solo soprano voice that hauntingly intones the first prayer: "O Lord, of Thy heavenly bounties deprive me not." At the beginning of the piece, the voices successfully invoke the feeling of a dark medieval monastery. As the work continues, however, it fails to carry as much meaning, especially in the instrumental passages. It is only with the incantation of the last prayer that Part's music reaches the level of power it maintained in the opening section. Although the orchestral backdrop is unabashedly minimalist, it is passionately and unpredictably so.

Si tratta di Spiegel im Spiegel , uno dei pezzi più eseguiti di Arvo Pärt, qui interpretato dal grande violinista russo Vladimir Spivakov e dal pianista Sergej Bezrodny. Lo stesso pezzo viene ripetuto con delle minime variazioni altre due volte, una delle quali nella versione per pianoforte e violoncello. Il tutto incornicia simmetricamente Für Alina , l’altra composizione presente sul cd, anch’essa reiterata per due volte. E’ un pezzo per pianoforte solo, costruito su una scarna melodia al di sopra di un’armonia molto rarefatta. Il risultato sono cinquanta minuti di un’atmosfera uniformemente ciclica, in cui la simmetria speculare maschera la ripetizione.
