Pleasurehorse is one Shawn Greenlee, rhythmic power electronics maestro with one previous disc on Vermiform as well as the excellent "Dropdead: Reconstructed" 12" on Load, currently on bass duties in the newly reformed Six Finger Satellite. Think Merzbow with beats. Mystery Brinkman aka Mr. Brinkman (duh) used to be in Providence duo Forcefield (remember their split 7" with Lightning Bolt?), here presenting similar cut-up sonic collages, albeit with a more playful, thrift store quality. Comparable to post-performance era Hanatarash. The first in a series of split 12"s from our friends at Load.

THE OUTSIDER: HARRY PARTCH 15 May 12.30am-1.30am 2002 A rugged individualist, American composer Harry Partch went to extraordinary lengths to distance himself from both the musical world and society. Partch believed that the 12 tone octave used in Western music for centuries was simply wrong. He developed his own scale, which included 43 notes. To play his music, he built his own instruments, which have a beautiful sculptural quality of their own. He developed a new concept of music theatre which has influenced many other composers and musicians, including Philip Glass, Tom Waits and Gavin Bryars. During the great depression Partch abandoned music to become a hobo. For 10 years he rode freight trains across America, keeping notebooks which became the source of later compositions. He remained a nomad until his death in 1974. The documentary includes interviews with Philip Glass, Gavin Bryars and Partch biographer Bob Gilmore. I am a Peach Tree Composer, theorist, inventor of musical instruments, and one of the most colorful characters of 20th century music, Harry Partch (1901-1974) broke with Western tradition and forged a new music based on a more primal, corporeal integration of the elements of speech, rhythm and performance using the intrinsic music found in the spoken word, the principles of acoustic resonance and just-intonation. The Seventeen Lyrics of Li Po was composed between 1931 and 1933 and is among Partch's earliest extant compositions. They were composed for Intoning Voice and Partch's Adapted Viola, a hybrid instrument consisting of a cello neck grafted onto the body of a viola, its open strings sounding one octave below the violin. Partch used texts from the eighth century Chinese poet, Li Po.

This stuff by Harry Partch is difficult music. Not difficult as in painful, but as in unfamiliar. At first it sounds out of tune, but in fact it's just that he wrote the notes between the notes - notes that sound sharp or flat to an ear accustomed to a 12 tone octave (note: Partch was preceded in microtonal music by the Mexican composer Julian Carillo , about whom I have very little information).
The young Partch destroyed his early compositions, and thereafter wrote pieces to be played on instruments of his own design and construction. Harry Partch was one of those great American iconoclastic visionaries, like Charles Ives Frank Lloyd Wright Ayn Rand Sun Ra , and others, who went completely their own way and did something wonderful.

Harry Partch: Barstow: Eight Hitchhiker Inscriptions from a Highway Railing at Barstow, California [1968 Version]
Edited by Richard Kassel A Genesis of a Music never Genesis of a Music continues to live an in-print, out-of-print existence. Barstow most popular works. Its origins embody Partch as bricoleur Barstow went through several revisions and one major reconception when he added percussion to the string and keyboard scoring in 1954. The final version of Barstow , which Partch completed in 1968, is the basis of this edition. In addition to the historical and analytical essay on Barstow, In order to study Barstow Partch's legacy is considerable, fascinating, and extremely difficult to maintain. Those that are doing so through performance, publication, and shared opinion must struggle heroically at times against long odds and old prejudices, and the success they've had is a tribute to the strength of their beliefs and the legacy itself. I believe that the time is long overdue to put aside Partch's intensely ambivalent relationship with academia and facilitate full and properly equipped scrutiny of his art, as I hope this edition of the 1968 Barstow in its small way succeeds in doing.

Harry Partch (1901-1974) was one of the most original composers of the last century. Obsessed with mathematically pure tuning systems and concerned that Western music had divorced itself from drama, he drifted around the U.S. from one residency to the next, modifying and constructing instruments to play his unorthodox harmonies, and training actors, dancers, and musicians to perform his monumental music dramas. Partch came to San Diego as early as 1941, and he continued to visit throughout his life. He eventually settled in Encinitas in 1969, and moved to Normal Heights in 1973, where he passed away. His legacy has been difficult to assess, as his most significant works require the unwieldy ensemble of instruments that Partch built (a one-of-a-kind collection stored for many years at SDSU); consequently, performances are extremely rare. Scholarship in the 1990s, however, has made a strong case for Partch as one of America's great composers. Contributing in good part to this scholarship are the series of "Enclosures"-writings, recordings, and videotapes-published by the American Composers Forum on their Innova label. Two recent entries in this series have especially strong ties to San Diego.

We all know the story: hobo, instrument builder, recluse, drinker, theoretician, vital composer. We all also know the music: dense, broad, playful, serious. But Partch was, and remains, a confusing figure. Many people like Partch (as is often the case with John Cage) as an idea more than they like his music. I would like to suggest that Partch's music is important, but his status as an 'idea' is also significant, and indeed useful. He functions as an ideal, whose life throws the careers of other composers into stark relief. His life continues to deride composers who enclosed themselves in 'real jobs,' in the self-serving factory lines of both the entertainment industry and academia. Partch's music has a strange quality. Some initially relate his compositions to his lifestyle, and label his music "quirky." This does a disservice to the man's work, which I think contains more sheer effort than any other's oeuvre. The way deeply understood cultural traditions, (Asian, African, Native American, Jazz, classical, philosophical et al) are woven into his

Important questions in Partch scholarship remain unanswered: [1] What catalyzed Partch's decision to abandon 12 tone equal temperament? [2] Did Partch build instruments prior to 1925-1926? If so, what were they? [3] Do all the pages except for the title and final page of the 1933 draft of Exposition Of Monophony date from 1933? If some of the pages date from earlier drafts, what are theyand from which draft do they date? [4] What were the ratios of Partch's initial just array of 1923? What thought process led him to expand his initial 12-tone just array up to 55 tones, and then back down to 41 between 1923 and 1933? [5] When and how did Partch arrive at the concept of the Tonality Diamond? [6] Why did the Exposition of Monophony go through 5 drafts between 1927 and 1933? [7] Why was there a three-year gap between the first and second drafts of the Exposition (1927 to 1930) while the subsequent three drafts took place at one-year intervals? [8] What was the organization and what were the general contents of the original 1928 Exposition [9] Why did the 1927-28 Exposition have 90 pages, while the 1933
