The author of the highly regarded short story collection Black Tickets (1979) and the award-winning novel Machine Dreams (1984) mines familiar terrain: the cycle of life, with special emphasis on the three major mileposts of birth, marriage, and death. Phillips' central character here, Kate, tends to a new baby while serving as her dying mother's caregiver. Adding further stress to Kate's life is her new marriage and her role as stepmother to her husband's children by a previous wife. Phillips tells her tale not through the linear unfolding of a plot but by exploring the multifaceted nature of time: the toll it exacts through aging set against the opportunity it affords for reinventing oneself. This is domestic fiction at its most domestic; the story brims with vivid details of day-to-day family life, revealed largely through dialogue, which Phillips unerringly captures with consummate authenticity. Her strength has always been in knowing her characters from top to bottom and in sharing all that she knows about them in the most compelling fashion. Brad Hooper (Booklist/April 15, 2000)

Southern Writer
Jayne Anne Phillips
By Michelle Justus Talbott
"I don’t find it odd or unusual to represent a cross-section of lives in my stories. These characters aren’t based on specific people they’re composites of people I have met or imagined. The transformation happens when the writer imagines being this or that person. I suppose I wasn’t limited to being a good girl, living in one particular way and staying on one particular track." Phillips grew up in Buckhannon, West Virginia, population 8,000, but at age 18 while a student at West Virginia University at Morgantown, she began taking solo cross-country trips. She worked a number of odd jobs during these summer excursions and lived in various houses with even more varied types of people. From these experiences, Phillips gained insight into the unconventional and sometimes dark side of those she met, an insight which she presents with empathy in her writing. Although literary critics have exhausted superlatives in describing her work, not everyone was pleased with her first novel

Feminist Politics: Facing the Future Thirty years ago, women were poised before what promised to be a whole new era for feminist politics. There was an accumulation of aspirations as more women flooded into universities and the labour market; an explosion of resentments against the continuing trivialisation and disparagement of ‘the feminine’; and an increasingly confident critique of the social and political theories that so grabbed our contemporaries but paid scant attention to gender inequalities or the situation of women. It was a time of great inventiveness and innovation, perhaps particularly so because one of the characteristics of the moment was that most of us knew little of what had gone before. We might have read Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex ; we had some hazy ideas about the battles women had fought to win their right to vote; but much of the previous history of feminist thinking and agitation was still shrouded in forgetfulness and indifference. We knew very little about our precursors. Much of this has been extraordinarily productive. In my own field of feminist political theory, there has been an explosion of critical work taking on the leading political theorists whose ideas frame current normative conceptions; and a much more explicit focus on the way the discourses of political life operate in the inclusion or exclusion of women. In the process, there was what one might describe as a ‘turn towards politics’ within feminist research.

    Biographical Information
Jayne Anne Phillips was born in the small town of Buckhannon, West Virginia, in July of 1952. After high school, Phillips enrolled at West Virginia University, earning a B.A. in 1974. During the mid-1790's, Phillips undertook a trip destined to forever effect her life and her writing. She left West Virginia for California, embarking on a wandering cross-country trip that would lead to numerous jobs and experiences and encounters with the broad spectrum of humanitytruly the good, the bad, and the ugly. The people and experiences from this trip would later emerge as the lost souls and struggling survivors that her fiction is so known for. Before that would happen, though, she entered the University of Iowa, completing her M.F.A. in 1978. In between those degrees, in 1976, Truck Press published her first short story collection Sweethearts . This small press collection earned Phillips the Pushcart Prize and the Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines Fels Award.
Sweethearts was followed two years later with a second small press collection

    Jayne Anne Phillips
Jayne Anne Phillips (b. 1952) rose directly among the brightest stars of American literature with her first collection of short stories, Black Tickets (1979). Raymond Carver praised the "crooked beauty" of Phillips' stories and it is thanks to him that she is now known as a writer who "is in love with the American language". Phillips' language is layered and sensual; it is exact to the minutest detail: each and every word is meaningful. Black Tickets has since become a classic of the short story genre. Phillips' highly acclaimed and many times awarded production - two collections of short stories and three novels - has been translated into twelve languages, including Finnish. Her running theme is the family, particularly the relationship between mother and daughter. In Phillips' words, "the family is our spiritual blueprint". Our first intimacies with mother and father, sisters and brothers, and our native home are the elements from which we build ourselves in endless permutations, even if we should leave home and the family become dispersed. In her early production, Phillips describes without sentimentality people on the margins of society, prostitutes, madmen, murderers and lonely people who are left without protection and security from a family. It is only in her latest novel, MotherKind , that the family appears as the stronghold of happiness. Although the setting of the novel is highly explosive, the threats and violence described by Phillips in her earlier works are no longer there. The independent thirty-year-old Kate becomes the mother of a family when her husband brings two wild boys from an earlier marriage into their union and she herself gives birth to a third son. At the same time, in the nest of her new family, Kate takes care of her mother, who is dying of cancer. The novel paints the cycle of motherhood and daughterhood, birth and death - in other words, time - but also focuses on how to survive the demands of everyday life. Phillips first participated in the Lahti International Writers' Reunion as early as in 1983.
