Born 20 January 1894 in Rockland, Maine, Walter Piston was recognized in his lifetime as the ultimate musical craftsman, producing a body of orchestral and chamber work distinguished by its quintessential neo-classic qualities of clarity and proportion. Also a noted educator, Piston taught at Harvard from 1926 to 1960 and wrote three significant music textbooks: Harmony Counterpoint (1947), and Orchestration (1955). Among Piston's many noted students were Elliott Carter , Leonard Bernstein, and Arthur Berger. Following graduation from Harvard in 1924, Piston traveled to Paris for studies with Nadia Boulanger and Paul Dukas. There he became enamored of French neo-classicism and the later works of Faure and Roussel. A musical climate celebrating a revival of Bach and the discovery of jazz infiltrated his work. Returning to the United States, Piston developed a sophisticated and witty compositional style, capturing with precise accuracy the many cultural and philosophic trappings of his native New England. His Symphonies Nos. 3

Walter Piston, Harvard Professor Leroy Anderson recounted in a 1953 interview for the Boston Sunday Post how Piston taught him to be objective:
"The general tendency of a composer is to fall in love with what he does. Piston always advised us to listen to our compositions as though someone else had written them. My biggest disappointment came the day he handed me back one of my pieces with the comment that it sounded like improvisation. I was crushed...But he was right. Every church organist improvises and that was my trouble. I had been playing the organ at the East Congregational Church in Milton for $10 a Sunday and sure enough, I had fallen into the habit of improvising to fill the gaps that always occurred. Piston's advice was good and I've never forgotten it."
Walter Piston, composer and educator, taught at Harvard for 34 years, from 1926 to 1960. During this time scores of eminent composers and musicologists studied with him, most notably Leonard Bernstein, Eliot Carter and Leroy Anderson.
Bernstein said of Piston "Everything he taught me has stuck - especially the example of his highly refined ear, and his non-pedantic approach to such academic subjects as fugue...I love his own music (and still do) although I cannot say that I was particularly influenced by it stylistically (as I was by Copland) - except in the matter of the highest standards of craftsmanship and clarity of sonic intention".

Walter Piston
Walter Piston, the grandson of an Italian seaman (the original family name was Pistone), was born in Maine in 1894. The family settled in Boston in 1904, and Walter was educated there at the Mechanic Arts High School. He worked as a draftsman for the Boston Elevated Railway, eventually entering the Massachusetts Normal School of Art; meanwhile he had learned enough piano and violin to play pickup engagements. In 1916 he enlisted and spent three years in the Navy, assigned to play the saxophone in a Navy band. He entered Harvard in 1920 as a full-time music student, and was graduated summa cum laude in 1924. As the winner of the John Knowles Paine Fellowship, Piston traveled to Paris for a few lessons with Paul Dukas and, primarily, two years of study with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Piston returned to America in 1926 and was appointed to the faculty of Harvard, where he remained until 1960, composing, teaching, and writing. He was an excellent teacher; his students included such American luminaries as Elliott Carter, Irving Fine, Harold Shapero, and Leonard Bernstein. Among his numerous honors, awards, and commissions were a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1934, two Pulitzer prizes for his third (1948) and seventh (1960 ) symphonies, and in 1951 he became the first recipient of the Walter W. Naumberg Chair of Music. He attained full professorship in 1944, and was named professor emeritus in 1960. Piston's music is beautifully crafted and technically assured, qualities which, combined with his reputation as a pedagogue, have occasionally given the mistaken impression (as is also true of Hindemith) that he is little more than a conservative, dry, academic composer. As Gerard Schwarz says of him

"Chamber Music." Various players
(Naxos)
Walter Piston (1894-1976) had a profound impact on American music in his long tenure at Harvard and through influential texts he authored on harmony and counterpoint. But his muscular music neo-classic in form and full of wily harmony, melodic breadth and buoyant rhythms should be heard more often. His orchestral music gets more attention than his chamber music, so this survey is particularly welcome, even if some scores reveal more perspiration than inspiration. The music includes a neo-Brahmsian Piano Quintet (1949), a cleverly scored Quintet for Flute and String Quartet (1942), and, from 1964, a glassy Piano Quartet and a String Sextet of great density. Tunbridge Fair
intermezzo for Symphonic Band

Walter Piston, Practical Theorist
Mark DeVoto, Tufts University
Invited colloquium, Harvard University, 1994. 12 pages + 4 pp. handout. Complete text available from the author. It hardly seems possible that Walter Piston would be a century old this year. Or even that it was eighteen years ago that he died. It doesn't even seem thirty-four years ago that he retired from Harvard, so vivid is the memory of the man himself to many of us. But perhaps even more vivid than our personal memories of Walter Piston, which include his total dedication to his art, his quiet wit, his charm, modesty, generosity, and reserve, even more vivid than these is the legacy of his teaching, which so many of us knew so well and continue to know so well today because of the enduring value of his writings. Many others have written about his compositions, which after a period of eclipse that was perhaps inevitable, even in Boston, are beginning to emerge again with the vigorous attention that they deserve. But it's the Piston of his four books that I particularly want to speak about today, in part because of our work together on Harmony, but also because I so much admire his economical, precise prose style. I suppose that everyone knows that Piston got a certificate in draftsmanship from the Massachusetts College of Art even before entering Harvard to study music, and that his calligraphic scores were the basis of facsimile editions of many of his works. But I'm willing to hazard the suggestion that Piston might well have been able to make a decent living as a writer even if he had never become a musician.
