Piston, Walter Hamor Influential American composer, who was chiefly a composer of orchestral and chamber works and often wrote for unusual combinations of instruments. He was born in Rockland, Maine. In Paris he came under the influence of Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky . Piston taught music at Harvard from 1926 to 1960. His compositions exhibit rigorously logical formal structure and radical harmonies, often approaching the limits of tonality. Among his compositions are eight symphonies, a ballet, concertos for violin and for viola, and chamber music, including string quartets. Two of his symphonies (no. 3 and no. 7) won Pulitzer Prizes.

PISTON, Walter b Rocklands, Maine, 20 January 1894 d Belmont, Massachusetts, 12 November 1976, aged eighty-two He taught himself violin and piano and played in theatre orchestras and dance bands. His main studies were in draughtsmanship and architecture. During World War I he played saxophone in a Navy band. He entered Harvard University in 1920 and after graduating in 1924 he went to Paris to study with Boulanger and Dukas. In 1926 he returned to the USA and a position at Harvard teaching there until 1960. He won many prizes and honours, and his books on harmony, counterpoint and orchestration have received international acclaim. It appears that he was an unusually methodical composer who rarely found it necessary to revise anything he had written. The pieces on this disc - presenting a substantial overview of his chamber music - were featured at the ninth Annual Townsville Festival of Chamber Music in Australia, at which time they were recorded. From them Piston emerges as a composer with a very strong identity. His language is sometimes pushed to the very edges of tonality, but overall stays within the bounds of conventional key-signatures yet without ever lapsing into blandness. Another striking feature of his music is that it has the sort of contrapuntal logic and inevitability we associate with that of J S Bach; and he was clearly a master of the intimate instrumental dialogues which characterise the greatest chamber music.

Also a noted educator, Piston taught at Harvard from 1926 to 1960 and wrote three significant music textbooks: Harmony (1941), C ounterpoint (1947), and Orchestration (1955). Among Piston's many noted students were Elliott Carter Leonard Bernstein , and Arthur Berger. Following graduation from Harvard in 1924, Piston traveled to Paris for studies with Nadia Boulanger and Paul Dukas. There he became enamored of French neo-classicism and the later works of Faure and Roussel A musical climate celebrating a revival of J.S. Bach and the discovery of jazz infiltrated his work. Returning to the United States, Piston developed a sophisticated and witty compositional style, capturing with precise accuracy the many cultural and philosophic trappings of his native New England.
