Remembering Francis Poulenc on the 100th Anniversary of his birth
Satie's influence and the composer's intrinsic mistrust of intellectual theorizing soon led him to drift into the circle of defiant young musicians who were thumbing their noses at the musical establishment. Six of them were soon to form a loose association under the name "Les Six" Poulenc, Honegger, Milhaud, Auric, Durey and Tailleferre. What they shared was not a common musical style, but a love of many things that made "serious" music lovers and post-Wagnerians of all stripes frown with disdain: circuses, dance-hall music, popular tunes, irony, humor. - Roger Clement for Unitel

Poulenc's Stabat Mater
Francis Poulenc composed his Stabat Mater , for soprano, mixed chorus and orchestra, during 1950 and 1951. The first performance took place at the Strasbourg Festival on April 22, 1951. The composition, in the form of a "grand motet," is a setting of a thirteenth-century hymn in Latin attributed to Jacopone da Todi. The hymn is about the reaction of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the crucifixion of her son Jesus. "Stabat Mater" means "the mother was standing." The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1980) describes Poulenc's Stabat Mater as "a powerful and profoundly moving work." Poulenc was moved to write the work by the death of a friend, Christian Bérard, a painter and set designer. FRANCIS POULENC (20TH CENTURY COMPOSERS SERIES) , a biography of Francis Poulenc by Benjamin Ivry, is available from Barnes and Noble. Poulenc's Stabat Mater is in twelve movements: 1. Stabat mater dolorosa ( Très calme
2. Cujus animam gementem ( Allegro moltoTrès violent
3. O quam tristis ( Très lent
4. Quae moerebat (

Francis Poulenc Francis Poulenc was born in Paris, France on January 7, 1899. Poulenc's father was Emile Poulenc who became one of the directors of the pharmaceutical firm Rhone-Poulenc. Never one to be without money, Poulenc's composing was often viewed as more of a hobby than a necessity. Plus the fact that Poulenc never studied at the famed Paris Conservatoire or any other musical institution made it difficult for Poulenc to be accepted by his peers. Poulenc's final opera was a one act tragedy entitled La Voix Humaine (The Human Voice) featuring a young elegant woman who has been deserted by her lover. This opera was premiered at the Paris Opera-Comique on February 6, 1959. In addition to his three operas, Poulenc composed a number of concerti for organ, harpsichords and piano as well as masses, chamber music with only a few orchestral works including Les Biches and Model Animals. Poulenc died on January 30, 1963 in Paris. back to top

Place: The Carmelite convent at Compiegne, Paris.
Time: During the French Revolution and subsequent Terror 1789 - 1794 Act I
Scene 1 The library in the house of Marquis de la Force, Paris; April 1789. The Chevalier rushes in, concerned about his sister Blanche's safety as her carriage has been stopped by a protesting mob. The Marquis, who has been resting, recalls the horror he and his wife faced in a similar situation. Unfortunately, his wife was pregnant with Blanche at the time and died giving birth to her in that carriage. The Chevalier is extremely worried because Blanche is rather high strung and impressionable. Blanche finally appears, seemingly fine, and says she's tired and will go to bed. A scream is heard as Blanche thinks she's seen a terrifying shadow on her wall. She asks her father's permission to join the Carmelite convent as she feels she must find salvation. Scene 2 The parlor of the Carmelite convent.

... Home Page Francis Poulenc Life After receiving a classical education, the French composer Francis Poulenc studied with Ricardo Vines who introduced him to Satie and Auric. During the First World War he worked as a typist for the Admiralty in Paris and became one of the six French composers (with including Honegger Auric Tailleferre Durey and Milhaud ), known as Les Six, who rejected romaticism and impressionism. After the war he studied under Charles Koechlin Initially light-hearted and ironic in style, the death of a close friend in 1935 brought a new depth to his work. The songs written after 1935, when he began accompanying the French baritone Pierre Bernac, are among his best works. Francis Poulenc Works Poulenc won considerable success with his comic opera Les Mamelles de Tirèsias, with a text by Apollinaire, written in 1944 and staged in Paris in 1947. The tragic opera Dialogue des Carmèlites, with a libretto by Georges Bernanos dealing with the execution of Carmelite nuns during the French Revolution and based on Gertrud von le Fort's novel Die Letzte am Schafott (The Last on the Scaffold), has entered international repertoire. Other stage works, in addition to a number of scores of incidental music and film music, include the ballet Les Biches, first staged in Monte Carlo in 1924.

FRANCIS POULENC

Januar 1963 in Paris. Aus: "Komponisten der Gegenwart", ein Loseblatt-Lexikon
