Praetorius, Michael (c.1571 - 1621)
Church Music Descended from a family of strict Lutheran persuasion, Praetorius based a great deal of his music on Lutheran hymns and on the Latin Lutheran liturgy of the time. His Musae Sioniae, in nine parts, contains a variety of Lutheran church music, polyphonic and homophonic, with a number of works which have become a well enough known part of present choral and hymn repertoire, in particular the familiar carol Es ist ein Ros entsprungen (A Rose has grown), In dulci jubilo and Puer natus in Bethlehem (A Boy is born in Bethlehem). Instrumental Music Instrumental music by Michael Praetorius is confined to his collection of dances, Terpsichore. A set of organ chorales is included in the seventh book of Musae Sioniae.

To keep pace with the increaseof duties Julius Caesar increased the number of praetorssuccessively to ten, fourteen and sixteen; after his time thenumber varied from eight to eighteen. The praetors were elected, like the consuls, by the peopleassembled in the cornitia centuriata and with the same formal- ities.’ They regularly held office for a year; only in thetransition period between the republic and the empire wastheir tenure of office sometimes limited to a few months.2 Theinsignia of the praetor were those common to the higher Romanmagistrates—the purple-edged robe (toga praetexta) and the ivory chair (se/Ia curulis); in Rome he was attended by two lictors, in the

Selections from the Terpsichore Collection, 1612
The complete Danceries of the Terpsichore collection is over 300 pieces. This is only a sampling of what is available in that herculean work. Michael Praetorius was actually Michael Schultheiss, the son of a Lutheran pastor. As was popular at that time, he Romanized his name. Schultheiss means village mayor , so this was converted into Praetorius (i.e., civic leader One should keep in mind that Praetorius did not compose these works. Rather he learned these from French dancing masters serving at the Court of Wolfenbuettel, and they were compiled as lessons or examples of good multipart music writing. Praetorius's own compositions are all sacred in nature, so it's rather ironic that when his name comes up, he is associated with a very large collection of secular music further named after the Greek goddess of dance: Terpsichore. This page will grow steadily as I uncover more Terpsichore pieces in my collection of sheet music.
Notes: Numbering of dances is often arbitrary: Many sources used.

Hyperion Records sleeve notes provide biographical background, dedication to church music, and focuses on the collection of dances that he revised, edited, and presented to German audiences.

    MICHAEL PRAETORIUS (?1571-1621)
    Music from Terpischore
Excerpts from the sleeve notes Furthermore, Praetorius printed a number of pieces among his section of courantes that come from England rather than France. Nos 151, 152, 154 and 123 are settings of the English popular tunes 'Wilson's Wild', 'Light of Love', 'Grimstock' and 'Packington's Pound', while nos 157 and 158 are versions of a lute piece by John Dowland and a song by Thomas Campion respectively. Praetorius presumably obtained these pieces from Emeraud and thought they were French, but Emeraud probably found them in the repertory of popular tunes used by the travelling groups of English actors and musicians that toured Germany in the early seventeenth century; their performances included 'jigs' or short popular dramas set to popular tunes of this sort. We have put them together to make up a suite of six English courantes. Peter Holman ©2001
