Preisner's Music Concert Compilation Album by Zbigniew Preisner Virgin Grade: A Preisner's music is the best sort of film music / concert disc one can purchase. While Preisner is widely known for his short but powerful cues, this retrospective gives us the best from his scores with Kieslowski and his earlier works. Some of the cues are Zbigniew's darkest around, yet they carry such grandiose string sounds, that one is instantly hypnotized to the Preisner sound. The highlight to this compilation is that Preisner has arranged the concert so that the cues blend into one another flawlessly...so much so that it is hard, at times, to pick up the transitions from one cue to the next. The cue from At Play in the Fields of the Lord (perhaps his darkest piece to date) is especially powerful as presented by a live orchestra and without the task of timing against visuals. Most compilations present different versions of cues if they are re-conducted without the film and here Preisner has the freedom to use these multidemonsional motifs without constraints. Such was the case, for those of us outside Poland, with the arrival of Krzysztof Kieslowski's television series, Dekalog (1987). For those unfamiliar, Dekalog was a series of television films set in an apartment block in contemporary Warsaw and based very loosely around the Ten Commandments. Two of the dramas, which ran around an hour each, were expanded to feature length and released internationally. Dekalog V - Though Shalt Not Kill became A Short Film About Killing , and made quite a splash on the arthouse circuit, while Dekalog VI - Thou shalt not commit adultery reached a handful of cinemas as A Short Film About Love Dekalog has played three times on BBC television and in the UK is probably the second most successful European TV subtitled drama series import after Das Boot The ten films are stark, spare and photographed with an austere beauty. THE LAST SEPTEMBER Zbigniew Preisner MMm Review by Reviewer name The Last September is set in Ireland at the end of the nineteenth century as the conflict between the Irish republicans and the British is reaching a climax and stars Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon. The story is about a wealthy English family who try to ignore the rising storm around them and live their normal life of affluence. Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner (the Three Colours trilogy and Aberdeen ) has written a slow and morose score, resisting all temptation to give the music an Irish flavour. The CD opens with 'The Last September Suite' which summaries the musical elements and the mood of despair and sadness which prevails through the majority of the score. The composer has been minimalistic about his use of instruments with solo and duet combinations of guitar, trumpet clarinet and harp, but the majority of the score is played on piano and cello. The themes and variations, however, tend to be far from minimalistic, involving complex and intricate passages. The use of the cello highlights the sombreness while the piano introduces a delicate counterpoint. This combination is particularly enjoyable in the cue 'The Tennis Party'.
