Sus primeras composiciones las realiza siendo todavía bastante joven. En su primera presentación en público en las Sesiones de Música Contemporánea declara su rechazo el estilo romántico . A partir de 1918 inicia una serie de viajes que le llevan a recorrer toda Europa y Estados Unidos. Durante estos años no deja de trabajar y estrenar obras como "El amor de las tres naranjas" y sus ballets "Chout", "Paso de acero" y "El hijo pródigo". Dieciséis años después regresa a su país natal. El vanguardismo es la tendencia de mayor arraigo entre los artistas de ese momento, por lo que también se refleja en los trabajos de Prokofiev. A estos días pertenece "Angel de fuego" o su "Primer concierto para violín"; obras inspiradas en el expresionismo o el lirismo. El compositor atraído por el realismo escribe en estos días sus mejores piezas. Entre éstas cabe destacar "Pedro y el lobo" de 1936, su bello ballet "Romeo y Julieta", compuesto entre 1935 y 1936, y la ópera "Guerra y Paz". En la última etapa artística de su vida cultivó el neoclasicismo. A lo largo de su carrera artística obtuvo el reconocimiento público con importantes galardones. In my view the composer, just as the poet, the sculptor or the painter, is in duty bound to serve man, the people. He must beautify human life and defend it. He must be a citizen first and foremost, so that his art may consciously extol human life and lead man to a radiant future. Such, as I see it, is the immutable goal of art." Russian composer and pianist. The politics and aesthetics of Soviet-era Russia created great artistic tensions. Sergei Prokofiev's career and music reflect this in many ways. Yet they also reflect a composer who was aware of his own musical strengths and used this to his advantage. Prokofiev showed his talent, especially for composition, at an early age. He entered the conservatory at St. Petersburg with a large number of compositions already written. He studied with Rimsky-Korsakov, and finished his composition studies in 1909. He continued studies in piano, and in 1914 earned the conservatory's highest honors. He quickly established a reputation as something of an enfant terrible , both in his playing and in his compositions.
