Folklore in the Music of Prokofiev
by Grant Gibbs
Sergei Prokofiev
Sergei Prokofiev was born in 1891, in what is now known as Dnepropetrovsk in the Ukraine. The Russian composer and pianist studied as a young man under former Russian composers such as Reinhold Moritysovick Gliere, and Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov (F and W, p.387). Then from 1918 to 1933 Prokofiev lived in Europe. This would be his home base from which he would tour much of the world including the USSR, Japan, and the United States. After he grew tired of the touring lifestyle, Prokofiev would return to his homeland of Russia. But, he would never be happy here because of the Soviet Government constantly condemning his music as having "modern tendencies" (F and W, P.387). Sergei Prokofiev would later die in 1953, but not before immortalizing himself through his many great works. Two of his famous works are located in the links below. If you would like to take a peek at these works, you could see why Prokofiev is considered so unique!
Peter and the Wolf
"Peter and the Wolf" is a story written primarily for children, but it's appeal has become universal. This story has the charm and appeal of all great fairy tales, which made it a perfect work for Sergei Prokofiev to create an orchestral narrative to lead the reader through the story. This is the story of a young boy named Peter, who wanders into an open meadow and meets a bird, duck , and a cat. When Peter's grandfather realizes he is playing in the meadow , he immediately goes to Peter and warns him of the danger that lurks in the meadows surroundings. The grandfather takes Peter home and tells him not to return to the meadow. But in the next scene, Peter sees his animal friends being attacked by a Wolf in the meadow. Peter goes to the assistance of his friends and they work together to capture the wolf. Next, Peter convinces the hunters in search of the Wolf to go along with him and take the Wolf to the zoo.

    Mystery and Contradiction

Prokofiev, Prisoner of the State One of the greatest Russian composers was an early twentieth-century composer, Sergey Prokofiev, born on April 23, 1891 in Ukraine. Unlike a majority of composers during his time, Prokofiev was able to entertain, surprise, shock, and even leave his audiences in disgust with a wide variety of compositional styles, such as his "Classical" Symphony in contrast to "Suggestion Diabolique" for piano solo. What is most interesting about Prokofiev, however, was the tremendous pressure that he must have felt from the politics of his day, and how it affected his music. As Kauffmann puts it in her entry for the Encyclopedia Americana, His music, under the influence of communist ideology, underwent a change, growing more harmonic and less infused with mocking humor. (p. 651) It is very plain and simple to see that Prokofiev was influenced by poilitics, but what is not so simple is deciding whether or not Prokofiev's reaction to political pressure was sincere, or if he was just trying to please his critics and get his reputation back.

He wrote his first music at the age of five and his first opera at nine. He was a pupil of Gliere before entering the St Petersburg Conservatory at the age of thirteen, where he studied harmony and counterpoint with Liadov, orchestration with Rimsky-Korsakov and conducting with Tcherepnin, as well as piano. He graduated with the Rubinstein Prize in 1914. He travelled extensively over the next twenty years, visiting America and touring Western Europe as a pianist and conductor of his own works. By 1936 he had settled permanently back in Russia but his work fell foul of the Soviet authorities in 1948, and it was not until 1959 that his music was officially reinstated and approved in Russia. E DWARD G REEN COMPOSER, MUSIC EDUCATOR / NEW YORK CITY Sincerity in Music BY EDWARD GREEN Part 1 I will be speaking tonight on a piece of music I love, the Classical Symphony of Sergei Prokofiev. This symphony has thrilled people deeply and often since its premiere in 1918 in St. Petersburg, Russia. I think the thrill this music makes for is genuine. I learned from Aesthetic Realism that every time we hear music we have a judgement about its sincerity. Even if our judgement is unconscious, or hard to articulate, it is there. Instinctively people have felt that sincerity has to be present in art, and all good music criticism, from the beginning, has agreed. So how can we be sure, how do we know the sounds we are hearing are honest? Eli Siegel taught that sincerity has a structure. He said, opposites, notably power and grace, are one whenever expression is sincere. The meaning of this for music and for life is very large. For the first time sincerity can be studied because its basis has been seen. There is a trend in modern music, which Prokofiev's

He was a pupil of Liadov, Rimsky-Korsakov and others at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He became widely known as a brilliant pianist and applied his knowledge of the piano in his compositions, winning the Rubinstein prize with his first piano concerto at age 23. His appearances were usually as the interpreter of his own compositions. For some years, he lived in exile, traveling on a League of Nations passport. He visited Russia in 1927, 1929, and again in 1932. He finally settled in Moscow with his family in His style may be described as the antithesis of that of Scriabin. He aimed at the realization of primitive emotions, and playfulness and satire are also characteristics. His sympathies and taste inclined toward the classical, but his manner was independent. Among his works are the Scythian Suite for orchestra; the ballets
