Introduction (born 1659; died Westminster, 21 November 1695). He was a chorister in the Chapel Royal until his voice broke in 1673, and he was then made assistant to John Hingeston, whom he succeeded as organ maker and keeper of the king's instruments in 1683. In 1677 he was appointed composer-in-ordinary for the king's violins and in 1679 succeeded his teacher, Blow, as organist of Westminster Abbey. It was probably in 1680 or 1681 that he married. From that time he began writing music for the theatre. In 1682 he was appointed an organist of the Chapel Royal. His court appointments were renewed by James II in 1685 and by William III in 1689, and on each occasion he had the duty of providing a second organ for the coronation. The last royal occasion for which he provided music was Queen Mary's funeral in 1695. Before the year ended Purcell himself was dead; he was buried in Westminster Abbey on 26 November 1695. Dido and Aeneas , written for a girls' school at Chelsea; despite the limitations of Nahum Tate's libretto it is among the finest of 17th-century operas.

/Purcell Catalogue details The excerpt from Purcell's march from the music for the funeral of Queen Mary, 1695, is played by The King's Consort, conducted by Robert King.
The recording is made available by courtesy of Hyperion Records Ltd. The music played at his funeral was none other than that which he had written for the funeral of Queen Mary II only 10 months earlier. The three hundredth anniversary of the death of Purcell was commemorated at the British Library by this exhibition. Most of the major surviving autograph manuscripts in the UK were brought together and shown along with related printed material and pictorial and documentary sources. Included among the autographs were the newly discovered volume of keyboard music, on display for the first time since its acquisition for the nation. Henry Purcell was one of the greatest English composers, flourishing in the period that followed the Restoration of the monarchy after the Puritan Commonwealth period. Purcell spent much of his short life in the service of the Chapel Royal as a composer, organist and singer. With considerable gifts as a composer, he wrote extensively for the stage, particularly in a hybrid musico-dramatic form of the time, for the church and for popular entertainment, a master of English word-setting and of contemporary compositional techniques for instruments and voices. He died in 1695, a year after composing funeral music for Queen Mary. Stage Works Recommended Recording The Fairy Queen (2 CDs)

Church Music Purcell provided a number of verse anthems and full anthems for the liturgy of the Church of England, as well as settings of the Morning and Evening Service, the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, Te Deum and Jubilate. The anthems offer considerable musical interest, exemplified in the verse anthems Rejoice in the Lord alway and My heart is inditing. Other sacred vocal music includes the Latin psalm setting Jehovah, quam multi sunt as well as settings of sacred poems by contemporary writers. Recommended Recordings

days of Ferozeshah in the previous campaign. And it needed the crushing defeat of Gujrat, on the 21st of February 1849, to bring the war to a conclusion, and this time to give the Punjab to England. It was annexed on the 2nd of April 1849. See J. D. Cunningham, History of the Sikhs (1849); S. S. Thor- burn, The Punjab in Peace and War (1904); Sir Lepel Griffin, Ranjit Singh (“ Rulers of India” series, 1892); P. Gough and A. PUNKAH (Hindostani pankha), strictly a fan. In its original sense the punkah is a portable fan, made from the leaf of the palmyra; but the word has come to be used in a special sense by Anglo-Indians for a large swinging fan, fixed to the ceiling, and pulled by a coolie during the hot weather. The date of this invention is not known, but it was familiar to the Arabs as early as the 8th century, though it does not seem to have come into common use in India before the end of the 18th century. Of recent years it has largely been supplanted by the electric fan in barracks and other large buildings. championship of England was instituted in 1876, and an amateur championship in 1886. Etymologically considered, “punt ‘ certainly was adapted from ponto, a word used by Caesar (Bell. civ. p. iii. 22) of a light vessel for transport in Gaul. Later (as by Gallius and Ausonius) it was also applied to a floating-raft used as a bridge, a pontoon, and so connected with pons, bridge.
