Home Henry Purcell has been one of my greatest favourites for several years, and I believe he is the greatest British composer ever. I am not alone to believe this. A couple of years ago, Classic CD had this as their cover story. View the cover here (108 Kb) Henry Purcell was born into a family of musicians, and he has a musical upbringing as a boy chorister (as have many other British composers). It was very fortunate for young Henry that he was born at the time he was, and not earlier. Cromwell's regime ended in 1660, and it was a good thing for the musical establishment. Cornwall destroyed the musical establishment in Britain, and they had to began all over again when Charles II entered the throne. So, there were few musicians around when Purcell was born. Purcell worked with the British Court until the 1680's, where he began composing more for the theatre (f.ex his semi operas.). Purcell made some of his greatest music for the royals. As good examples I can mention his odes, welcome songs, anthems and services. He also made instrumental music. During the 1690's Purcell wrote mostly for the theatre (f.ex. the Fairy queen, King Arthur and the Indian queen), but he did also write a beautiful and move ode on the death of Queen Mary in 1695 (and the same music were performed in his own funeral a few months later). My favourite Purcell work is his opera "

"Poetry and painting have arrived to their perfection in our own country; music is yet but in its nonage [immaturity], a forward Child, which gives hope of what it may be hereafter in England, when the masters of it shall find more Encouragement." English Composer. Most important English composer of the early Baroque. Henry Purcell spent his entire career in various capacities as a musician in the English royal court. He began as a singer in the Chapel Royal as a boy. When his voice broke in 1673 he was named an assistant to John Hingeston, the keeper of the king's instruments. Ten years later he succeeded Hingeston in the position. In 1677, he was appointed a composer to the king. A series of other court appointments finally led to his taking the position of organist at Westminster Abbey in 1679, and in 1682 he was appointed organist to the Chapel Royal. Purcell is probably best known for his dramatic works, including songs and instrumental music for some forty plays. His one true opera (short as it is) was Dido and Aeneas , written for a girls' school in Chelsea. A larger work

HENRY PURCELL Westminster Abbey Organist Composer of English Opera Dido and Aeneas Called the greatest English composer of the 17th century, Henry Purcell was born in London in 1659 to a musical family. His father was a court musician. Also a pupil of composer John Blow (1649-1708), Henry spent his childhood immersed in musical activity. Later an organist at the Chapel Royal, he was first a choirboy. Becoming the composer to the king’s string orchestra at age 18, Purcell was then hired two years later as organist of Westminster Abbey. Assuming the title "keeper of the royal instruments," his job description included tuning the organ. With a musical career spanning the English reigns of Charles II, James II, and the beginning of William and Mary, the composer’s achievements made England a musically significant country. folksong melodies and strives for variety in choruses. In vocal music he also used lively rhythms, dissonance for aural interest, and the ground bass tonalities recitative and aria , or the speaking and lyrical opera styles.

In 1677 he was appointed composer-in-ordinary for king's voices, and in 1679 he succeeded John Blow, his teacher, as organist of Westminster Abbey. Purcell married in either 1680 or 1681, and from that time he began writing music for the theatre. In 1682, he was appointed organist of the Chapel Royal. His court appointments were renewed by James II in 1685, and William III in 1689, and on each occasion he had the duty of providing a second organ for the coronation. This final royal occasion for which he provided music was Queen Mary's funeral in 1695.
