Purcell, Henry England's greatest native composer, who wrote music of virtually every kind known during the Restoration. His compositions combined elements of the French and Italian baroque and traditional English musical forms. Born in Westminster (now London), Purcell became organist at the Chapel Royal in 1682 and was appointed composer in ordinary to the King's Musick (1683), a major post, under Charles II. Purcell also taught music to the nobility; wrote ceremonial odes and anthems for royal events; and composed for the stage, church, and home.Purcell is most famous for his theatrical music. His only true opera is Dido and Aeneas, a masterpiece based on a tragedy by Nahum Tate and first performed in about 1689. His other dramatic works are actually instrumental and vocal music written to accompany plays. Purcell also wrote many songs and duets, both sacred and secular. His instrumental compositions include fantasias and sonatas, mostly for strings.

Purcell was born in London in 1659, and he died in Westminster Abbey in 1695 from natural causes. He had six children and he was married in 1681. There was no record of him traveling. Purcell learned his music in Westminster in 1679. While he was there he was a choirboy, he tuned instruments and he was a private pupil of Matthew Lock and John Blow. He wrote music for the church, and for the theatres. He was a chorister in the Chapel Royal. He made organs and kept them for the king. Composers P: 75 of 75 prev. table next Henry Purcell (1659-1695) According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music , Henry Purcell was an English composer; boy chorister; pupil of Humfrey and of Blow, whom he succeeded as organist of Westminster Abbey in 1679. Said to have died through a cold caused by being locked out of his own home at night. Wrote short opera "Dido and Aneas" for a Chelsea girl's school; also semi-operas (music not altogether predominant) including the "Fairy Queen", "King Arthur", "Dioclesian", "The Indian Queen", and music for various plays. Other works include "Odes for St Cecilia's Day" and other cantatas; songs; keyboard works; trio sonatas (some described in 3 parts and some as in 4, but identical in scoring), including the "Golden Sonata"; anthems and other church music. His subtlety in rhythm (especially in the treatment of English words) and harmony has contributed to his high 20th-century repute; he notably influenced Holst, Britten, and others.
