Joachim Raff (1822-1882)
Symphony No.5 in E "Lenore" op.177
The fifth of Raff's eleven surviving symphonies is generally regarded as being the best of them and is probably also the best known today - there are currently no less than five CD recordings! Described by Donald Ellman as "a most important pivotal work between early and late-romantic styles", "Lenore" represents the high point of Raff's attempt to combine traditional symphonic structures with romantic pictorialism. Despite following a programme not wholly of Raff's own devising, it is probably the most satisfying musically of his "programme" symphonies.
Together with the much later 'Four Shakespeare Preludes', "Lenore" is unusual in Raff's orchestral output in portraying a literary work in music. Raff's "programme" music generally avoided such literal depiction of literature or paintings in favour of more generalised scene setting or mood description - though sometimes to a detailed programme of his own creation. It is not known what inspired him to depart from his usual practice for "Lenore".
He began mulling over ideas for the work in 1870 and finished it during the summer of 1872. Since the huge success of the 3rd. Symphony, a new Raff symphony did not have long to wait for its premiere, which took place at a private performance in Sonderhausen in December 1872. Raff recorded that the audience (of 20!) "appeared beset with some fright". At the first public performance in Berlin the following year the work was very well received. Bechstein declared "It was an unbelievable success for Berlin". More performances quickly followed throughout Germany - followed by England and then America. Ebenezer Prout reported on "Lenore's" first English hearing "those who were present will remember the sensation created by its performance".

Pris 59,75 (vejl.)

Raff, Joachim (1822 - 1882)
Joachim Raff enjoyed the highest reputation in his life-time, later to be remembered only for his famous Cavatina, an attractive short piece that appeared in many arrangements. Encouraged by Mendelssohn and then by Liszt, he served the latter as an assistant at Weimar, orchestrating Liszt's earlier symphonic poems. His own work as a composer started in earnest when he left Weimar in 1856, to settle in Wiesbaden and then, from 1877, in Frankfurt as director of the Hoch Conservatory, a position he retained until his death in 1882. Orchestral Music Recent attempts have been made to re-assess Raff's music. His eleven symphonies go some way towards a synthesis of pure music and the programmatic element of the Neo-German school exemplified in the symphonic poems of Liszt. Most of the symphonies have titles of one sort or another, the last four representing aspects of the four seasons. He wrote concertos for piano, for violin and for cello, and other works for solo instrument and orchestra, as well as a series of suites and overtures. Chamber Music Raff contributed to the repertoire of German chamber music with works ranging from piano quintets to duo sonatas, the last including five sonatas for violin and piano.

Joseph Joachim Raff
Joseph Joachim Raff was born on 27 May 1822 in the small town of Lachen, on the shores of lake Zurich
Joseph Raff had fled south to avoid compulsory conscription into Napoleon's army. After spells as organist and
music teacher in a monastery in Wettingen and also in Lucerne, he set himself up as a schoolmaster in Lachen.
In time he married the daughter of the local cantonal president - Katharina Schmid.
The Raff family was poor but young Joachim had a basic education from his father. The boy was later sent to
before financial pressures on the family forced his return to Switzerland. He finished his education with two years
at the Jesuit Seminary in Schwyz, where he carrie off prizes in German, Latin and mathematics. When Raff left
Schwyz in 1840 it was to return to Rapperswil, near Lachen, to begin work as a teacher. As a child, though,
Raff had already shown great natural talent as a pianist, violinist and organist, performing at the Sunday concerts
in the nearby spa of Nuolen. Having taught himself the rudiments of music, he began to compose too.

World-wide FREE postage on CD purchases JOACHIM RAFF A Brief Sketch by Dr David C F Wright Like Brahms, the Swiss composer Joseph Joachim Raff objected in some degree to the German movement known as the music of the future. Traditional ideas were his brief and therefore he was somewhat against Liszt, Wagner and the moderns and on the side of the Schumanns and Brahms. Yet Raff orchestrated some of Liszt's works at Weimar. It was a very stupid feud with letters of invective passing between musicians and their supporters and inflammatory articles in newspapers and other journals. Schumann founded 'David's club' in 1834 to fight, what he called, musical philistines. Raff is only really known for his famous Cavatina, Op. 85 no. 3, yet he wrote eleven symphonies, two concertos each for violin and cello respectively, a piano concerto and several chamber works and songs. He also wrote opera. Fortunately his concertos, symphonies, piano trios and some of the quartets are now available on CD.

NEW Piano music CD available soon to users of this site at a discount price - details here A frequent question, especially from those in North America and Australia, is "where can I find those tempting Raff CDs mentioned on this web site?". For those produced by comparatively large, mainstream labels such as CPO, Chandos, Hyperion, Marco Polo and Naxos there isn't much of a problem - your local music outlet with a good classical department should have some of them. Failing that, your favourite internet or mail order store should be able to supply them. If that fails then contacting the recording company should produce a list of importers or stockists in each country - visit the company's web site first. Sourcing some recordings is more difficult, however. Smaller European labels often aren't available elsewhere, or only have erratic distribution. In particular, the acclaimed series of Raff CDs produced by the Swiss Tudor label can be frustratingly difficult to find outside of Switzerland or Germany. This is also true of other small labels publishing Raff repertoire - Ars, Arte Nova and Pavane for example.
