Jean-Phillipe Rameau (1683-1764). Jean-Phillipe Rameau nasceu em Dijon em 1683. Uma vez que só se viria a destacar já mais tarde na sua vida, não se sabe muito da vida de Rameau: sabe-se sim, que foi para Itália em 1701, e que até 1715 exerceu cargos de organista em Paris e Dijon. Em 1722 publica a sua importante obra "Traité de l'harmonie", na qual introduz aspectos teóricos muito inovadores no seu tempo, e em 1732 pública um tratado acerca do modo de acompanhar ao cravo ou ao órgão. Em 1733, e já com cinquenta anos, começa uma frutífera carreira operática, compondo "Hippolyte et Haricie", que no entanto não obteve grande sucesso. Apesar de tudo, Rameau comporia mais vinte óperas até ao final da sua vida, almejando rapidamente o sucesso e o reconhecimento do público. Foi no domínio da ópera que Rameau mais inovou. Esta inovação reside na experimentação de novos jogos harmónicos, de uma instrumentação nova e audaciosa e na introdução, por Rameau, de recitativos parecidos com os italianos, separando mais veementemente os recitativos (récit) das árias. Assim, devido ao seu génio, não admira que fosse aclamado como o sucessor de Lully como compositor de ópera francesa, em em 1745 fosse nomeado compositor de música de câmara da corte. Não será de esquecer que Rameau ainda inventou a "opera-comíque", um género que pretendia fazer frente à "opera buffa" italiana. Na música de Rameau encontra-se um sentido inovador fora do comum. Primeiro, deixa o mundo harmónico e melódico de Lully, e depois cria um novo colorido instrumental, sem no entanto lhe abandonar o estilo e o gosto, mantendo o ritmo e as formas. Members of the nobility danced in private theatrical productions, at formal balls, and at less formal gatherings, and the well-trained courtier was expected to display grace and skill as a dancer. High-ranking amateurs sometimes including Louis XIV himself figured alongside professional dancers in court entertainments. The premier of Destouches' Thanks to notation systems developed in France during the late 17th century, and with the help of treatises describing overall style and specific dance steps, we are able to study and reconstruct dances from that period. Over three hundred notated dances, mostly from France and England, have survived. Although many of these notated dances are to theatrical music by French

They are chosen from the Suites in which these composers arranged their pieces for publication, and played on modern copies of Ruckers and Taskin instruments. Forqueray worked at the court of Louis XIV, as did Couperin, and they played together. Rameau's pieces were mostly published posthumously. Dandrieu was a Parisian. Duphly died in 1789, a day after the French Revolution broke out, 'symbolically bringing to a close the epoch of the clavecinistes Terence Charlston inaugurated the Historical Practice course as Head of Early Music in the Royal Academy of Music, and he brings musicological knowledge and fluent fingers to this music, the first of a projected series for Deux-Elles. Charlston writes his own introductory notes which are adequate; track timings might be useful for broadcasters. A very pleasing introduction to the genre, as well recorded as played.

Concert Review L'Ensemble Arion Conversations Galantes The core musicians of this Canadian group have played together for nearly twenty years. It has explored widely the trio sonata repertoire and brought in other artists for particular events and recordings. Their programme in the South Bank's Early Music Series was of French chamber music of the early 18 th Century, two of Jean-Phillipe Rameau 's Pieces de clavecin en concert and, by the less-well known Jean-Baptiste Quentin (1718-50), a Trio Sonata Op 15/6 and a Sonate en quatuor Op 8/4. The Quatuors (with three melody voices) developed from the trio sonatas for two main voices. Quentin was a violinist with the Paris Opera and a prolific composer. Also included was one of Telemann 's works in the French style, his Quatuor Parisien No 4 in nine short movements, character pieces with French titles. This is an exceptionally fine and well-integrated group, the long experience together paying off in their obvious rapport and perfect ensemble. They had also solved all the balance problems. Claire Guimond's baroque flute is soft and sweet-toned, but never overwhelmed in this company.
