Susan Hogan COSTUMES EXECUTED BY: Susan Hogan RUNNING TIME: 1 hour NUMBER OF DANCERS: 6 Characters of Dance is an evening-length work choreographed in 1990. The following are preparatory notes interspersed with descriptions of the finished work and presented in the form of a project. Project . To choreograph a "new" baroque work. Guidelines: fanciful atmosphere, corrosive statement, doing impossible things in dance (i.e., using dance to represent abstract concepts). Title . This piece was inspired by a title of a baroque dance suite, Jean-Ferry Rebel's (1715). None of Rebel's music, however, was used in the new work. Rebel mapped dance moods as generated by musical forms. The character of each musical segment indicated the character of the dance performed to it. Rebel thus characterized dance moods through musical stimuli. Characters of Dance , on the other hand, recycled dance vocabularies (historical, classical, modern) and their eccentric uses by characters. Here, the emphasis is no longer on dance forms as rhythmic behavior. Instead, dancers articulate erratically different styles in new constructs.

Each of us plans to choose from the seventeenth and eighteen-century North German repertoire from the generation just before, and including Johann Sebastian Bach, so perfectly suited to our fine Noack organ. ANTONIO VIVALDI
Antonio Vivaldi did many things for the world of music during his lifetime. Vivaldi became a priest early in his life and was known as "il prete rosso" or the redheaded priest. This priest wrote many great musical works. He composed music in almost every genre known at the time. Vivaldi wrote over seven hundred and fifty works which included operas, motets, oratorios, cantata, concertos, and sonatas. He was known mainly for his instrumental works but still did many great things for the singers of the day. Vivaldi took pride in being able to compose music faster than someone could copy the parts down.
Jean-Phillipe Rameau was one of the most famous composers of the eighteenth century. During his lifetime, Rameau became a wonderful composer of the opera. He also did much work on Music Theory and the principles behind music. Many of the rules for music that we follow today are found in his writings the "Treatise on Harmony" and the "New System of Musical Theory." Rameau was a master orchestrator of music and continually stretched the limits of music. He liked to experiment and try new ways of producing beautiful sound.

GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL
George Frideric Handel has become one of the most well known musicians from the late Baroque period. He was born in Germany and began studying music very early in life. Handel studied organ, harpsichord, and oboe. Throughout his life, Handel held several positions in different cities in Europe. Handel worked very hard to improve and develop opera and the oratorio. While Handel wrote several compositions such as suites, sonatas, concertos, and other choral music, he is most remembered for his oratorios. One that is still frequently performed today is

What is it?
Baroque music refers to the canon of music written within a certain period of time, which together as a whole, embodied certain qualities, style, and musical language derived from the philosophy of what music was, and should be, during that period. It is usually used to describe the music of Western Europe, but also of the Americas around the period 1600-1750. The seeds for this period were established before 1600, and the style developed during this period lasted later than 1750. While we can talk about early-, mid-, and late- baroque styles, we can also talk about national styles when describing the music. Most notably, Italian, German, and French styles were the most definintive. The term 'baroque' was applied to the period without the most positive impression. Baroque art, which already had been an established style, describes the term a bit; ornate, fanciful, rich in filigree and pomp. This describes the ornaments used in French baroque harpsichord music, of the festive nature of a Bach orchestral suite with trumpets and drums. But barocco also meant "a disfigured pearl," from the Portugese, and composers and critics in what would be later called the 'classical' style, looked back upon the Baroque period as one which had too much complexity and a lack of one true melody. Changes in the social requirements for music and taste, along with refinements in the instruments and body of musical ensembles influenced the styles composers would infuse into their music.

Music of Elegance: Aulos Ensemble performs Oct. 10
The Aulos Ensemble, one of America's most highly regarded and best known "original instrument" ensembles, recreates an evening of elegant music from the 18th-century court at Versailles, when the group performs for the Concert Society at the University of Maryland at 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, at The Inn and Conference Center. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 1998, the Aulos Ensemble was formed by five Juilliard graduates: Christopher Kreuger, flute; Marc Schachman, oboe; Linda Quan, violin; Myron Lutzke, cello; and Arthur Haas, harpsichord. Its unique configuration of wind instruments, strings and harpsichord enables the group to explore a wide range of authentic baroque performance. As a core group of five or in larger collaborations with guest performers, Aulos presents its own concert series at home in New York City, maintains an active touring schedule and records extensively. An informal pre-concert discussion, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., features James Weaver of the Smithsonian Institution, a member of the Aulos Ensemble and University of Maryland School of Music professors Mark Hill and Richard King.
