Composer Scrapbook Project Introduction Introduction Assignment Title Page Childhood Page ... Resources
  • Many people make scrapbooks of their lives to preserve memories of important events. In some ways, this is a fairly recent hobby. Historians often have trouble discovering information about people of long ago who made important contributions to society. Your task as a group of three history reporters is to research the life of an important classical composer of your choice. You will then build/create a total of 4 scrapbook pages depicting important pieces of information about them. Below you will find a list of recommended composers. However, if you don't see one you've heard of, some see me and we'll discuss it. Each of you will be responsible for one part of your composer's scrapbook and you will all work together on the title page. Each group's pages should follow the same basic format because they will all be linked into one "book." You will research by finding information about your composer on the internet and the encyclopedia CD-ROM, and by using books and other resources I will have available for you. In addition to the written information you include, each page will have either a map, a graphic image of your composer or an audio clip.
Bach, Carl Philipp Emmanual

Baroque Agility

BY Rick Walters Nicholas McGegan , the world's foremost conductor of baroque music, is the kind of persuasive musical evangelist who should become an unlikely PBS celebrity, like that mesmerizing nun who idiosyncratically rambles through art history. He has an upbeat British charm that Americans easily fall for, with a nimble wit that gets liberally dampened with sprays of silliness. McGegan was guest conductor last weekend at the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in music of the 17th and 18th centuries, a concert that had zip and buzz. Throughout the evening, the orchestra had a wonderful time, buoyed up by the conductor's infectious, light-hearted cheerleading. McGegan encouraged sharp and agile playing from an ensemble much more accustomed to romantic sweep. The strings responded easily, and the woodwinds and brass had one of their best concerts of the season. Only an unstuffy person who absolutely loves what he's doing could make an MSO audience eager to hear an obscure piece by Jean-Phillipe Rameau, a suite from the opera

    1.1. Background
The branch of mathematical understanding which we now call Fourier theory was born, like so many of the important results in modern mathematical physics, in the latter part of the 18th century. It seems first to have arisen as a problem in musical acoustics. Between about 1720 and 1740, the physicist Joseph Sauveur and the musical theorist Jean-Phillipe Rameau established the result that any sustained musical note, as for example from a bowed violin string, could be analyzed by the human ear into a fundamental and overtones ; and that the frequencies of these overtones are harmonically related to the fundamental . What was not known was why this was so. The answer was sought by mathematicians among the predictions of that enormously powerful analytical tool that Newton (and others) had invented - the calculus. The first to successfully model the vibrating string by a partial differential equation was Daniel Bernoulli . In 1748, he showed that, if the ends of a string were fixed at

American Baroque's adventurous concerts combine 18th-century music with new works, composed for the group through collaborations and commissions. With a presentation style that is both engaging and informative, the group uses a variety of approaches in concert: through pre-concert discussions or informal commentary during the performance, with discussions of their instruments and their unique programming, to multimedia and mixed media settings that combine technology and tradition. In addition to the following offerings, we would be happy to customize or design a new program for your series. Most of American Baroque's programs are for 5 performers (flute, oboe, violin, viola da gamba, and harpsichord); however, the group occasionally invites guest players.

M usic is essential to the total human experience. It has always played a major role in society. The nurturing of musical sensitivity and the cultivation of musical abilities leads to an enriched quality of life. Music is a field of study, an area of knowledge with its own inherent skills. It provides the means for creating, describing, and performing and affords students opportunities to experience music as an academic subject which utilizes cognitive(knowledge), affective (attitudes and feelings), kinesthetic (the senses), and psychomotor skills. Music is a part of our human heritage. It promotes appreciation of the diversity of human cultural experience through the music of people of the world. Music is an integral part of a complete education. Listening Project 2002-2003 There are several pages here, created by myself, relating to music: Boccherini Gliere Gounod Medieval ...
