Shulamit Ran
"Shulamit Ran has never forgotten that a vital essence of composition is communication." So ran the review in the Chicago Tribune following the premiere of Legends by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This sort of reaction is by no means unusual. Around the country, from Seattle to Baltimore to Houston, commentary on her music typically runs thus: "gloriously human," and "compelling not only for its white-hot emotional content but for its intelligence and compositional clarity," "Ran is a magnificent composer." It is hardly surprising, then, that Symphony , which has drawn references to "the superior quality of her musical imagination and artistic invention" and "a work that will reward each new listening" should have won the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Shulamit Ran, born in Tel Aviv, Israel, where she received her early training, came to the U.S. at the age of fourteen to study, having received scholarships from The Mannes College of Music in New York and the America Israel Cultural Foundation. Her composition teachers in Israel and in the U.S. have included A.U. Boskovich, Paul Ben-Haim, Norman Dello Joio and Ralph Shapey. Her principal piano teachers were Nadia Reisenberg and Dorothy Taubman. Among her numerous awards, fellowships and commissions are those from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund, the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Fromm Music Foundation, WFMT, Chamber Music America, Eastman School of Music, the American Composers Orchestra (

Shulamit Ran Born 21 October 1949, Tel Aviv. Educated in Israel, her prodigious gifts were recognized by her piano teacher and family friends who took her to play the piano for Pablo Casals and Arthur Rubinstein. In 1963, she moved with her mother to New York to study piano and composition at the Mannes College of Music. Launched into a strenuous career as concert pianist by an appearance on one of Leonard Bernstein's Young People's concerts, she nevertheless continued to develop a strong compositional voice. She premiered her 1971 Concert Piece for piano and orchestra with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic. A recording of O the Chimneys (1939), a setting of Holocaust poetry by Nelly Sachs, attracted the attention of the American composer and University of Chicago professor Ralph Shapey. From 1973, then, she has been professor of composition at the University of Chicago. Ran has won all the prestigious composers' awards, including election to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters (1989) and the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for her First Symphony. "Equilibria: Shulamit Ran Balances,"
by C. B. White,
as published in the October 1994 ILWC Journal,
NOTE: She pronounces her name Shoo-lah-MEET Rahn, where the EE is more like a typical European long "i" sound than the American long "ee," and the accent is produced more by a slight rise in pitch than by stress. Displaying a typical lack of selfimportance, Ran first comments, "If they want to pronounce it the wrong way, that's fine." But she cringes as she corrects herself: "I HATE Shoo-LAH-mit."
Composer. Teacher. Wife. Mother. Chocolate lover.
At first glance, Shulamit Ran seems much like any other female composertaller than some, perhaps, she is charming, beautiful, and blessed with profuse brown curls that never seem to have a bad hair day, but pretty normal. The stature and timing of her achievements, however, set her apart.
Her 1989-90 Symphony won both the 1991 Pulitzer Prize in music and the first prize 1992 Kennedy Center Friedheim Award. Composer-in-residence of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and radio show host since 1990, this past July she became composer-in-residence at the Lyric Opera of Chicago as well. Three weeks shy of 24, she joined the faculty of the University of Chicago, where she has taught since 1973.
Ran's trip to success began October 21, 1949, in Tel Aviv. Born to ardent lovers of the arts, she quickly gravitated to music. Giving her what she needed, but never pushing, Ran's parents taught her to "reach for the sky." She spent her early childhood mentally hearing melodies to accompany anything that rhymed. At age eight, she discovered the piano, asked for lessons, and was sent to the piano teacher across the street. This teacher was responsible for the first public performance of Ran's musicIsraeli poetry she had set to music, notated by her teacher and sung by a children's choir over the Israeli Broadcasting System. Without telling her, her teacher had submitted the songs. Ran heard the performance on the radio at summer camp and was hooked on composing.

Israeli-born Shulamit Ran has a strong personal voice and a powerfully expressive musical style. Her compositions on the Mirage CD are also united by their common reliance on Middle-Eastern elements. Whether an early work, such as the exuberant Israeli folk-song inspired Sonatina (for two flutes), or the relatively recent Mirage (for five players), her music reflects her heritage. The latter work is an exotic and effective mixture of an "incantational style of delivery" (from the composer's notes), frequent heterophonic textures, and Middle-Eastern scales and ornamentations. Even Ran's choice of amplified alto flute evokes the timbre of the ney (middle-Eastern end-blown flute).
