It is hardly surprising, then, that her Symphony, which has drawn references to "the superior quality of her musical imagination and artistic invention" and "a work that will reward each new listening" should have won the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Music.

Kala Pierson, Rochester
Composing a Woman's Voice(s): Shulamit Ran's Apprehensions
Born in Israel and trained primarily in the U.S., Shulamit Ran has emerged within the past decade as a leading figure in American music. Her seven-year residency with the Chicago Symphony brought ample recognition for her orchestral works; yet many of her important contributions are in the field of chamber music. Her 1979 Apprehensions Apprehensions is on several levels consciously focused on female voice and female subjectivity. Beyond the practical choice of text and singing voice, and the fact of the work speaking Ran's own musical voice, there is a global concern on her part with high-level faithfulness to the text, to the voice of the fictional female narrator. The extraordinary musical and visceral power of Apprehensions lies in the fact that the composer realizes - in her own compelling tongue - a voice, a psychic being, a process of becoming. The many literal and symbolic voices present in the piece unite to produce a work rich in musical, ideological, and emotional meanings. Apprehensions is one of Ran's most powerful works, and one to which we may look for evidence of a vibrant and thoroughly mature musical voice in contemporary composition.
