CUBE and MASS Collaborate
On May 19, 1997 (see box), the members of CUBEwill present a collaborative performance with the remarkable MASS Ensemble. Formed in 1994, MASSis an ensemble of musicians, dancers and artists that brings together a wide range of musical and artistic elements into one creative whole. Combining cello, percussion, and ensemble co-founder William Close's invented electro/acoustic string instruments/sculptures (Close Long Bows: 25 feet long stringed instruments pulled and plucked with gloved hands) with dynamic movement and dance, the MASS Ensemble is as musically intriguing as they are visually striking. CUBE co-artistic director Patricia Morehead will compose a new work for the combined forces. Morehead's work will be an extract from a work-in-progress based on the legendary Sauk chief Black Hawk, with baritone David Halloway. The two groups will also collaborate on realizing graphic scores by Earle Brown and others. In addition, the MASSEnsemble will present several of its own works.

World, U.S., and Canadian premieres scheduled for the 2002-03 season, as compiled from the annual SYMPHONY survey
List by Orchestra or search by: More than 200 times this season, all around the U.S. and Canada, audiences will show up at an orchestra concert with absolutely no idea what they're in for. In each case, either a world premiere or a national premiere will mark the arrival of a new musical work. The annual American Symphony Orchestra League survey brought to our attention about 250 such premieres including performances marking everything from 100 years of powered flight (in North Carolina and Dayton, Ohio) to the first year of a conductor's tenure (in Cleveland). From Adams to Zwilich, our premieres list provides easy, searchable access for orchestra personnel and music enthusiasts who are looking for particular composers, orchestras, or soloists. The list includes titles of the new works, the orchestras premiering them, scheduled premiere dates, and the names of conductors, commissioning parties, and soloists. U.S. premieres are designated with an asterisk(*), Canadian premieres with a double asterisk(**); all others are world premieres. Titles and names not provided by the orchestras in the survey are designated TBA.

Anski's famous Yiddish play by the same name. My compositional point of departure was a musical line that begins the opening soliloquy of Khonnon, the play's (and opera's) protagonist, where his yearning and desire for his beloved Leya is first revealed. In The Dybbuk, Khonnon dies when it becomes clear that his love is to remain unrequited. Whereas most similar tales would end right there, Khonnon's death is only the first step in the journey to fulfill the great longing of the doomed would-be lovers.
