Introduction (born Ciboure, 7 March 1875; died Paris, 28 December 1937). Liszt ian bravura ( Jeux d'eau ) or Renaissance calm ( ); there was also the String Quartet, somewhat in the modal style of Debussy's but more ornately instrumented. However, he five times failed to win the Prix de Rome (1900-05) and left the Conservatoire to continue his life as a freelance musician. During the next decade, that of his 30s, he was at his most productive. There was a rivalry with Debussy and some dispute about priority in musical discoveries, but Ravel's taste for sharply defined ideas and closed formal units was entirely his own, as was the grand virtuosity of much of his piano music from this period, notably the cycles Miroirs and Gaspard de la nuit . Many works also show his fascination with things temporally or geographically distant, with moods sufficiently alien to be objectively drawn: these might be historical musical styles, as in the post- Schubert ian Valses nobles et sentimentales , or the imagination of childhood, as in . Or the composer's inspection might be turned on the East ( ) or, as happened repeatedly, on Spain (

Ravel, Maurice (1875 - 1937)
French, of paternal Swiss and maternal Basque descent, Ravel combined skill in orchestration with meticulous technical command of harmonic resources, writing in an attractive musical idiom that was entirely his own, in spite of contemporary comparisons with Debussy, a composer his senior by some twenty years. Piano Music Ravel was himself a good pianist. His music for the piano includes compositions in his own nostalgic archaic style, such as the Pavane and the Menuet antique, as well as the more complex textures of pieces such as Jeux d'eau (Fountains), Miroirs and Gaspard de la nuit, with its sinister connotations. The Sonatina is in Ravel's neo-classical style and Le tombeau de Couperin is in the form of a Baroque dance suite. Recommended Recordings Piano Music Vol. 1

January 29, 2002 Amazon Products Maurice Ravel plays Ravel The mere mention of his name brings ‘Bolero' to mind, and of course I am playing it now as I begin to tell you about the man and his music. With its relentless, pulsating rhythm, this bravura piece for orchestra is probably Maurice Ravel's best known work. ‘Bolero' was choreographed as a ballet by Bronislava Nijinska (the sister of Vaslav Nijinsky) and was first performed at the Paris Opera in 1928. It was an overnight sensation. Fifty years later ‘Bolero' again fired the public imagination when Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean brought the dance to millions of viewers when they used it for their winning Olympic, World, and European ice dance titles in 1983-4. In the original ballet production set in a Spanish tavern, a gypsy girl begins the dance on a trestle table with slow seductive movements. Gradually other dancers are drawn in so that by the end everyone is taking part. Built on a languid hypnotic rhythm that never lets up, the sinuous melody gradually rises to an impassioned climax as the dancers lose themselves in wild self abandon.

Maurice Ravel By Paul Musser paul@musica.co.uk Born 7 March, 1875, Cibourne, France Died 28 December, 1937, Paris, France Along with Debussy and Satie, Ravel aided in creating a distinctly French musical school at the beginning of the 20th century. Although frequently branded as an impressionist, Ravel's oeuvre goes well beyond this categorisation, showing great precision while including such diverse elements as neo-classicism, 19th century Romanticism and an inclination towards his own Spanish heritage. A Developing Composer Born of a Swiss father and Basque mother, Maurice Ravel showed an early affinity for the piano, eventually enrolling in the famous Paris Conservatory at the age of 12. His many years and multiple stints at the Conservatory where less than spectacular, according to his professors, and Ravel never managed to earn a degree.
