House of Maurice Ravel
French Composer, Ciboure
Maurice Ravel was born on the 7th of March 1875 in this house, to a Basque mother Marie Deluart (Mme Ravel) and Swiss Father Joseph Ravel, he was Christened Joseph Maurice Ravel just weeks after his birth, in the little 16th century Church of Saint Vincent (Just behind the house), he only lived here for approximately 3 - 4 months before the family moved to Montmartre in Paris for the reasons of his Fathers profession. There he was brought up amongst artists & musicians, which must have influenced his future career tremendously. Each year he returned to Ciboure for the annual family holiday (even after the deaths of his Parents he continued for nearly the rest of his life). On one of these holidays in 1928 Maurice Ravel wrote the famous melody "Bolero" in a small Hotel in Ciboure the Anchochury. Maurice Ravel died on the morning of the 28th of December 1937 and was buried with his Parents in the cemetery of Levallois Perret............

Biography
Maurice Ravel
Composer France Born 7 Mar 1875
Died 28 Dec 1937
Maurice Ravel was a shy man and never in good health. His more delicate compositions tended to be confused with those of Debussy: certainly they were both French, and both Expressionists, but Ravel wrote less and his influence was not as great as that of Debussy. Although his training was long and intense and he was a fine pianist, he did not rise to the heights he sought. Still, he has left some enchanting works, including 'Bolero'.
From the first decade of the century, Ravel had been regarded as an important disciple of Debussy, who was also composing exquisite pieces in the Expressionist manner. Expressionism associated music closely with poetry and literature. However, although the music of both Debussy and Ravel retains an essentially French ambience, it is a mistake made all too often to consider the two composers in the same bracket. While they were contemporaries and subject to the same influences, Ravel's harmonic construction differs from the elder master's, especially as Debussy's frequent use of augmented triads and the whole-tone scale makes the detail of his music different.
In works for the piano, Ravel was considered to be slightly in advance of Debussy. He was fond of recalling the past in his music: 'Le Tombeau de Couperin' and the unspecifically dated, though charmingly antique, Introduction and Allegro for flute, clarinet, string quartet and harp are two pieces in which novel combinations of instruments succeed in conjuring up ancient atmospheres (here French and Greek respectively). Ravel was a fine performer of his own piano music, and such virtuoso examples as the three pieces in 'Gaspard de la nuit' and the collection known as 'Miroirs', still hold terrors for aspiring pianists. The 'Mother Goose Suite' was originally a piano duet, with one easy part. It was later orchestrated. There are two concertos for the piano, one for the left hand only, as well as a number of chamber compositions.

Extended version of the Guide to Ravel available for download on the Info Zone Publications page. World Changes France had suffered defeat to Prussia (Germany) in the War of 1870 and was in an upheaval. French arts were flourishing, but the legal system was in decay. It was the age of emerging science, the climax of railways, and the beginning of aviation. In 1875, when Maurice Ravel was born, the world was in a big hurry to change. Today we are also facing a time of great change in the world. How many changes have you seen so far in your life? Home Life Maurice Ravel was born on March 7, 1875, at Ciboure near the Spanish border. He had a Swiss father and a Basque mother, but his family really came from France. Maurice's father was a highly skilled engineer and inventor. Ravel adored his mother. They were a happy family! When Maurice was three years old, his brother Édouard was born. The brothers were close all their lives. Edouard became an engineer and his father's partner.
