STEVE REICH (b. 1936) Life Noted minimalist composer who studied philosophy at Cornell and composition at Juilliard. He later studied with Berio and Milhaud and studied drumming with the Ewe tribe in Ghana in 1970. In 1973 and 1974, he played in a Balinese gamelan at Berkeley. He began his own ensemble in 1966 which has grown from 3 to 20 members. He has been highly influenced by ethnic music as shown by his interest in non-western drumming and gamelan music. His earliest works were for tape using texts from speeches and interviews as well as text from Charles Olsen and Robert Creeley. These pieces use a technique called "gradual phase shifting" which shifts the time between tapes so that they are slightly out of focus and are not together. Although the words are heard in the beginning they become highly distorted through the phase shifting. In 1967 he began writing instrumental music in combination with his use of tape and has recently written a number of non-electronic works. Steve Reich (b. 1936) Steve Reich, as an early pioneer in tape music and American minimalism, has established himself as one of the foremost composers of our time. Following studies in philosophy at Cornell University (1953-7), Reich turned to composition, first with Persichetti at Julliard (1958-61), then with Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud at Mills College (1962-3). His music is characterized by a strong, steady pulse and strictly diatonic and tonal harmonies. He is typically grouped together with other "first generation" minimalist composers such as Phillip Glass and La Monte Young, and more recently with younger composers such as John Adams. The music is deeply "American" in its roots, with an unrelenting pulse and short, repeating melodic figures often compared to rock-and-roll and be-bop. However, like other minimalist composers, Reich’s music is also largely influenced by extra-European forms and techniques, generally viewed as a response to the largely academic, elitist climate of new music in the 1950's and 60's. Reich’s early works were created in the early 1960’s at the San Francisco Tape Music Center. These tape pieces, such as "It’s Gonna Rain" (1965) and "Come Out" (1966), are the earliest examples of "phasing," one of Reich’s most used and most well known techniques. In this process, two tape loops are set into motion at two slightly different speeds, so that the tapes begin in unison and slowly shift "out of phase," creating a new set of harmonies and rhythms. This process was later incorporated into several pieces for traditional acoustic instruments (or instruments and tape), such as in "Piano Phase" (1967) and "Violin Phase" (1967). In addition to the initial process of phasing, Reich also introduces into "Violin Phase" the notion of "found" or "resulting" patterns (new melodic figures created from the overlapping voices of the original "theme").

Steve Reich When i was a freshman in high school, before I knew anything about Music Theory, when I couldn't tell the difference between Bach and Stravinsky, when I was still caught up in the 80s pop rock trend of Def Leppard, Duran Duran, and Paula Abdul, one of my friends played for me the last movement of Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint , and I thought it was one of the most incredible things I had ever heard. All of Reich's music has certain signature characteristics that affect me in many ways. His rich harmonies and their gradual unfolding give me a sense of calm, or maybe a feeling of slowly becoming awake. His use of rhythmic pulsation sometimes creates in me a push or a moving forward, and sometimes gives me the feeling of serenity, like the crashing of waves. His use of rhythmic complexity drives me and grooves me. His process of gradual shifting, beit melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, or textural, fascinates me and challenges my ears and my mind, which tries to figure out exactly what I'm hearing and if it's really important. Sometimes Reich's music is able to do all of these things at once. That type of feeling is impossible to describe.

I want to be able to hear the process happening through the sounding music... The distinctive thing about musical processes is that they determine all the note-to-note details and the over all form simultaneously. One can't improvise in a musical process - the concepts are mutually exclusive. Performing and listening to a gradual musical process resembles: -pulling back a swing, releasing it, and observing it gradually come to rest (demonstrated literally in his Pendulum Music); -turning over an hour glass and watching the sand slowly run through to the bottom;

He studied drumming when he was 14 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra timpanist; later he took a degree in philosophy at Cornell (1953-7) and studied composition at the Juilliard School (1958-61) and at Mills College (1962-3) with Milhaud and Berio, also becoming interested in Balinese and African music. In 1966 he began performing with his own ensemble, chiefly of percussionists, developing a music of gradually changing ostinato pattems that move out of phase, creating an effect of shimmering surfaces; this culminated in Drumming (1971), a 90-minute elaboration of a single rhythmic cell. From circa 1972 he added harmonic change to his music, and later ( Tehillim , 1981) melody. He has also worked with larger orchestral and choral forces ( The Desert Music Different Trains (1988), for string quartet and tape, won a Grammy for the best new composition.
