Home Composers Poul Ruders see also Edition Wilhelm Hansen updated 6 November 2002 Poul Ruders Edition Wilhelm Hansen Poul Ruders was born in Ringsted, Denmark in 1949. He graduated from the Royal Danish Academy as an organist in 1975 and as a composer is mainly self-taught. Although he has written some chamber works, Ruders is predominantly a composer for the orchestra, having composed a vast number of grandiose orchestral works, which the composer compiles under the description "symphonic dramas." The English critic Stephen Johnson writes: "Ruders can be gloriously, explosively extrovert one minute — withdrawn, haunted, intently inward-looking the next. Superabundant high spirits alternate with pained, almost expressionistic lyricism." The last decade has seen major Ruders commissions for a range of compositions including: Two Symphonies ( Symphony No. 1 for the BBC Symphony Orchestra premiered at the Proms at Royal Albert Hall in 1990 and was subsequently honored with The Royal Philharmonic Society's Prize for the best large scale composition performed in London that year; Symphony No. 2

Poul Ruders Poul Ruders (f. 1949) Offred Suite - I "Offred Suite" har jeg sammenstillet de fem arier, der synges af Offred (dansk Tilfred) heltinden i min opera "Tjenerindens Fortælling", baseret på Margaret Atwoods roman med libretto af Paul Bentley. Offred's fortælling udspiller sig under det fundamentalistiske styre i Gilead (det tidligere USA), et monoteokratisk diktatur i den første halvdel af det 21. århundrede, som undertrykker kvindens personlige og intellektuelle frihed. I operaen synger Offred om sin vrede, sine lidelser i fangenskab, adskilt fra ægtemanden Luke og deres fem år gamle datter. "Offred Suite" indledes med operaens åbningstakter og den første arie, I'm Sorry, My Story Is In Fragments. Offred starter sin beretning med at undskylde for hendes fortællings usikre og fragmenterede form. På en række lydbånd fundet to hundrede år senere taler hun til os, mens hun lever skjul. Det kommer frem, at hun var Tjenerinde, slave til en fremstående Kommandant kaldet Fred, hvorfor hun fik navnet Offred, bogstaveligt talt of-Fred (dansk til-Fred). Vi får aldrig hendes rigtigt navn at vide. I den tredje arie, Ev'ry Moon I Watch For Blood, klager Offred over, at hun efter et besøg hos lægen ikke er blevet konstateret gravid. Det er en farlig situation at være i: Hun er nu på sin tredje tjenesteplads, og hvis det ikke denne gang lykkes for hende at få et barn, vil hun blive deporteret til et af de forladte kernekraftværker for at rydde op i affaldet, og hun vil med sikkerhed dø af stråling.

Poul Ruders About the composer About the Stabat Mater Colorbar CD information About the composer Poul Ruders was born in 1949 in Denmark. His musical career started at the Choir school in Copenhagen, where he was admitted to the Boys' Choir. At an early age he became interested in composing. He studied organ and composition at the Copenhagen conservatoire. Though he was influenced by music from baroque to modern rock music, including modern composers like Glass and Stockhausen, his primary point of view is that his work should entertain and engage the audience. In his own words: "I want to seduce the audience, to give them a spiritual and musical experience". About the Stabat Mater Date Performers Boy treble, tenor, out-of-tune piano, organ, percussion and mixed choir Length 23.53 minutes Particulars The Stabat Mater is used as a starting point for a text collage by the composer himself. The poem is split up by texts from diverse sources: Büchner's Wozzeck, Picander's St.Matthew passion text, quotes from Churchill and descriptions of torture from the time of the Greek junta. In the musical collage one can hear medieval music, baroque recitatives and boogie-woogie by an out-of-tune piano. The singing is extraordinary too. Ruders makes the choir sing while breathing in, or in an very high-pitched falsetto.
