Programme Note The title of the piece "Abysm" derives from the literary quotation heading the first of the 3 movements of the entire work. Not uncommonly writers put a motto - often a short quotation from famous literary pieces on the page preceding their own work, as an "appetizer" of sorts or a spiritual and mental companion to what the reader is about to experience. That´s exactly what I had in mind, when I set out to compose this piece for BCMG. Each of the 3 movements is inspired by a short literary quotation taken out of its original contents, serving solely as a spiritual inspirator for the music that follows; in other words, it´s the beauty and profundity of the words and the many-layered associations yielded by them, which are mirrored in the music. Disc No: The Handmaid's Tale is based on one of the most exciting and disturbing novels of modern times, A Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. The Handmaid's Tale is a grim futuristic story of a fundamentalist, misogynist society where few people are fertile, and a story of love, power and escape from am extremist right-wing regime. The libretto was written by Paul Bentley after the novel and translated into Danish by Poul Ruders. The opera was composed for a large orchestra and organ, with a full opera chorus. The Handmaid's Tale has been recorded in a collaboration of the three state institutions dacapo, Danmarks Radio and the Royal Danish Theatre, Copenhagen. This is the first time ever that the institutions have cooperated in this way. The Handmaid's Tale was recorded live over a series of evening performances in the spring of 2000, and this is also the first time in recent years that an opera from the Royal Danish Theatre has been recorded in this way. Ruders, Poul (b. 1949) Hardly any Danish composer living today is more internationally-minded than Poul Ruders. Since he made his first impact in the 1980s with his brilliant orchestral works, there have been increasing requests from abroad for more works from his pen. And Ruders, with joyous energy, has plunged into large, demanding genres and forms. In 1996 he achieved what must surely be the ultimate in the dissemination of a composer's music: his Concerto in Pieces was premiered at the Last Night of the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. Poul Ruders began his career as an organist, and also studied composition with Ib Nørholm. For some years he worked as an organist in the Danish Church. Ruders' music is outward-looking with the emphasis on the appeal of sound. His starting-point was the Polish School, but his later works could be called Neo-Romantic. Besides his sparkling use of sound Ruders is also a master of his craft who can create brilliant instrumentation. Born in Ringsted, Denmark in 1949, he graduated from the Royal Danish Academy as an organist in 1975. As a composer, he is mainly self- taughta fact that probably accounts for the uniqueness of his work which manages to be strikingly modern, yet devoid of the prevailing dogmas of European modernism. Although he has written some chamber works, Ruders is predominantly a composer for the orchestra, having composed a vast number of grandiose orchestral works, which the composer compiles under the description "symphonic dramas." These days Ruders is getting even more attention thanks to the success of his full-scale opera for The Danish Royal Opera on Margaret Atwood's novel The Handmaid's Tale. With a libretto (in English) by Paul Bentley, and a production directed by Phylida Lloyd, the opera premiered in March 2000 to widespread critical and public acclaim.
